Yena Kim 1
2016 01

Yena Kim (1994) is a storyteller and visual artist who conveys story of her country, Korea with her cultural background. She approaches social controversy with a new perspective, showing two opposite stories at the same time with an unique collage. In her final work, she suggests lighting a candle in a capitalist world where human values are so often hidden by darkness. This collage series simultaneously shows negative political society of Korea in 2016 and her family`s society that faced a new life at the same time. She found an answer through the contrast of candle protests that led to the impeachment of Korean President Park and her own family context that has needed to navigate this contemporary era, welcoming new lives and finding hope. The countless candles you can see in her work imply the power of human life. The story of Korea in 2016 told by Yena is not just about her thing. She suggests that audiences reflect the meaning of candles to their society. She is in a constant process of research to restore better humanity.
