Earlier this year, ArtEZ Press was happy to announce that De gestiek van de architectuur by Frans Sturkenboom was selected by a panel of professional judges as one of the Best Book Designs of 2017. At the same time, 5 students of art academies in the Netherlands have seen and discussed 342 submitted books. The final selection consists of 21 books. This month, it was announced that De gestiek voor de architectuur, Ema (naakt op een trap) by Jeroen Lutters and Collecting Colour by Narayan Khandekar are part of this selection!

De gestiek van de architectuur. Een leerboek hedendaags maniërisme
One of the students in the jury, Auke Lansink (KABK Den Haag) says the following about the design by Josse Pyl, alumnus of the Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem: "A good design is a design you don't see. Just stick to a few rules. Beautiful in its simplicity, like the stone/Baroque-ish page numbers that start on the cover and continue through the whole book, always on the same line, and which happen to fit the ornamental imagery in the book. Where can I buy it?"
De gestiek van de architectuur is for sale on the ArtEZ Press webshop.

Ema (naakt op een trap). Studies in art-based learning
Amir Avraham's design is praised for the interaction between text and image. The appreciation for the design increases with every page turned.Malin Gewinner (Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem) says: "I slowly understand [...] who Ema is: she is the protagonist of Gerhard Richter's 1966 paintings. The book illustrates a fictitious dialogue between Ema and her master. Unconventional literary approach meets unconventional design!"
Ema (naakt op een trap) is for sale on the ArtEZ Press webshop and is also available in the English edition Ema (Nude on a Staircase).

Collecting Colour
Thijs Verbeek is complimented for his simple design that fits the content of the book seamlessly. Ruby van Vucht (Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam) says: "Simple and small. I would like to put this cute book in the breast pocket of my shirt and carry it with me!"
Collecting Colour is sold out.
