Financial arrangements

Here you will find a few important financial arrangements for students. Not all arrangements will be applicable in your situation. It is dependent on various factors, including your (side) job, resident status and nationality. Check thoroughly whether you meet the requirements.

Do you have questions about possibilities, requirements, private funds or something else related to financial struggles? Contact one of the student counsellors.

  • If you are enrolled at a university in the Netherlands, and you are Dutch or you have the same rights, you might be eligible for student financing. If you are not eligible for student financing because of your nationality, you might still be eligible for a student loan. Note that you will always have to pay back the loan, with interest!

  • If are not eligible for student financing or a student loan, but are you going to study to become an educator, you may be eligible for a teaching grant. You must be Dutch or have the same rights.

If you are already qualified to teach and are working as an educator in the Netherlands you could apply for funding when you continue studying. Application is possible between 1 February and 15 March.

  • If you want to study but are not eligible for regular student financing, and are between 30 and 57 years old, you may be eligible for the lifelong learning loan. Note that you will always have to pay back the loan, with interest!

  • Are you eligible for student financing and are you falling behind on your studies due to personal issues such as disability or illness? They can also direct you to other useful organizations. Find more information on the website of your municipality (only in Dutch):
