Internship

Do you want to do your internship in a country other than the Netherlands? You can! Before you go on an internship abroad, it is important that you make certain arrangements on time. Below, we explain all the things you need to keep in mind.

Internship

Arranging an internship

It is up to you to find an internship place with a company or organisation yourself. You can do this in consultation with the internship coordinator of your course, for example. When you have found an internship place, you indicate this in Osiris Student/Stay Abroad.

What are the deadlines?

The date by which you must arrange an internship place depends on the curriculum of your course. So ask your internship coordinator about this.

There are deadlines for requesting a scholarship or grant. So keep this in mind if you are planning to do an internship abroad. Go to the Scholarships and Grants page for more information about the conditions and deadlines.

Applying for a scholarship or grant

  • If you are going to another EU country, or to Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Turkey or Macedonia, you can apply for an Erasmus+ grant. Apply for the grant 6 weeks before you leave. You can find more information about the conditions and deadlines on the Scholarships and Grants page. Once it is clear which internship company you will be going to, you indicate this via Osiris Student/Stay Abroad. The Student Affairs Department will then send you a Learning Agreement and a Grant Agreement. You need to complete these documents and upload them in Osiris Student/Stay AbroadPlease note: your application for the Erasmus scholarship is only complete once you have submitted this Learning Agreement and the Grant Agreement.

  • If you are going to country outside the EU, you may be eligible for a Holland Scholarship. You can read about the conditions, the application procedure and the deadlines at Scholarships and Grants.

What else do you need to consider?

  • If you have a residence permit (to study) in the Netherlands, don’t deregister with the municipality! It is important that you remain registered somewhere in the Netherlands. Otherwise, the IND will think you have left and no longer require your residence permit. If you have questions about this, please contact the Student Affaris Department.

If you want to go on an exchange with a residence permit for the Netherlands, there are conditions. Read more about the conditions on the IND website. Please contact the Student Affaris Department for this.

If you need a residence permit for the country you want to go to, ask the company or organisation you are going to if they provide help with this. If they don't, it is important that you start the process yourself in good time. It can sometimes take quite a while before you receive your residence permit. You also need to allow for the cost involved in applying for a permit. This varies from country to country.

  • Where you end up living depends on the company or organisation you are going to. It is exceptional that a company can arrange housing for you. Usually you will have to take care of this yourself before you start your internship. In this case, it is important that you start looking for a room yourself on time. Just like in the Netherlands, there are many different ways to find a room. You can ask the company or organisation you are going to for advice about this. You can also find a lot of advice on the internet. Facebook pages are also frequently helpful for finding student houses!

If you go abroad for a few months, you may be able to sublet your room to another student – for example, an ArtEZ student who is just starting their course or an exchange student who is coming to ArtEZ for a few months!

  • Please note: if you are going on internship to a country outside the EU, you need to be particularly mindful of insurance questions!

    Healthcare insurance

All students need to be insured for healthcare abroad. Bear in mind that your insurance may not cover your medical costs, or not all of them. We advise you to contact your insurance company regarding the conditions of your insurance policy, and if necessary to take out a supplementary policy. If you are going to another country within the EU, you must have a European Health Insurance Card.

    Travel insurance

ArtEZ has a collective travel insurance policy for students who go abroad for an internship. Students are insured via the AIG Travel Guard travel insurance (policy number 60146509). Only trips made for ArtEZ fall under lthis policy.

    Liability insurance

Anyone who performs work activities on behalf of ArtEZ is covered by our general corporate liability insurance (policy number V0100108272). This also applies to students doing a national or international internship. Alongside this collective liability insurance, it is important that you have your own liability insurance. This is because only incidents which are work or study-related fall under the ArtEZ insurance. Contact your insurance company for more information about liability cover during your internship abroad.
In certain cases, the initial liability insurance for damage will be claimed from the party that caused the incident, in which case the ArtEZ insurance will serve as secondary insurance.

Interns must consult the company or the organisation where they are working to see whether they are covered by a liability insurance policy while at work. Cover will only be valid during study or work-related activities.

    Accident insurance

Interns must consult the company or the organisation where they are working to see whether they are covered by an accident insurance policy while at work. Cover will only be valid during study or work-related activities. However, students doing an internship (in the Netherlands or abroad) have 24/7 accident cover. In order to obtain this 24/7 cover, the Student Affairs Department must report your name and internship details to the insurance company Aon.

  • Because you cannot use your Dutch student card abroad, you can receive compensation. For more information, go to Public transport allowance for course or internship abroad – DUO.
