Studying at the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Arnhem means working on craft and making. You explore your identity as a maker, sit in on rehearsals, test material on stage, and head into the city for new collaborations. You look critically at yourself and your surroundings, and use music to give shape to ideas, in projects, performances, and public spaces.
When you study here, you join a community that is independent, experimental, and socially engaged. You work across disciplinary lines, music, theatre, visual art, and technology. You learn to place your work in the present and to engage in dialogue with audiences. That leads to new forms, from concerts to music theatre, from sound design to city projects.
In Arnhem you can feel the urge to make everywhere. One student is just out of a performance, another walks to rehearsal with an instrument or script, while a project group gets to work with students from Art & Design.
Choose Jazz & Pop, Music Theatre, Composition for Film and Theatre, or the Master of Music, and develop as a maker with your own voice. You work on technique, creation, and presentation, and you select targeted electives—about a quarter of your study. In this way you shape a professional profile that fits who you are, whether that is performing musician, composer, interdisciplinary maker, producer, or educator.
Artistic entrepreneurship is part of your toolkit. You learn to spot opportunities early and translate them into projects that make artistic sense and are practically feasible. Think visibility, funding, and network. You receive coaching from committed teachers and practitioners. We combine craftsmanship with research and reflection: why do you make what you make, for whom, and what does it do? You perform, create, and present in different contexts and translate that into your professional practice.
"It’s the people that I met here and what I learned through playing with and chatting to them. That’s what I’m most grateful for.”
Arnhem gives makers room, from workspaces to stages and productions. During ArtEZ’s joint introduction week you immediately meet students from Art & Design and Theatre & Dance. After that you collaborate across disciplines on campus and develop projects in the city with partners, funding, and performance spaces. Arnhem has leading cultural institutions such as Oostpool, De Nieuwe Oost, Introdans, Phion, and De Ereprijs. You will already encounter these ArtEZ partners during your studies, for example in projects. Many graduates choose to stay in Arnhem because of affordable work and living space, short lines, and visible opportunities in the professional field.
The ArtEZ Academy of Music in Arnhem is located within walking distance of Arnhem Central Station.
