Specific saxophone admission requirements

In addition to the general admission requirements, there are also specific admission requirements per instrument.
We would like to get as complete an impression of you as possible. Therefore, we assess several aspects:
Playing Skills and Technique:
5 pieces/songs with theme and improvisation, which differ somewhat in character and tempo. The style of the pieces is free — you can play any form of jazz, pop, funk, Latin, world music, or a mix of various styles. Improvisation is an important component.
During the audition, you may choose which piece you would like to play first. Preferably, you perform with your own band; if that is not possible, you may play with conservatory students. In that case, make sure to provide clear sheet music for the band members (three copies). Also bring two copies of the sheet music for the audition committee.
Scales: All 12 major and minor scales and triads across the entire instrument, played with either staccato or legato phrasing.

Sight-Reading and Aural Skills:
  • After a short preparation, play a simple melody or etude at sight.
  • Improvise by ear over a simple chord progression, and repeat a simple melody by ear.
Criteria:
During the entrance exam, the candidate is assessed on:
  • Talent and affinity
  • Ensemble playing
  • Musicality and aural skills
  • Sense of tempo and rhythm
  • Technique: posture, tone production, finger technique, and sight-reading
