The entrance exam:

The admission consists of two parts that are administered separately:

  • You will receive an invitation for this day by e-mail. During the admission day, you will perform a music assignment in a group, your singing and your theory will be tested. It will take place in a classroom of the conservatory equipped with school instruments, music stands, a backline and a grand piano.

For the admission day, you will prepare the following:

    Music assignment
Work out an assignment that you can do in ten to fifteen minutes with a large group of up to 12 people. For example, think about rehearsing a song, a small choral piece, an instrumental or rhythm piece or a musical movement game. Describe your music assignment on a piecde of paper and indicate what you want to do. Bring this preparation and the necessary additional materials, such as sheet music or a text with chord symbols, with you to the entrance exam.

    Singing test

Prepare two pieces with which you showcase your singing voice. For example, think of a pop song, musical song, classical song, children's song or jazz standard. These songs should differ in style, character and expression. If possible, accompany yourself on a chord instrument.

    The music theory test
The music theory test consists of an individual oral test and a written test. A music theory teacher will take both tests during the admission day. This hasn’t to be all perfect. The teacher will mainly check whether your basic knowledge and music theory skills are developable to the desired level. The individual oral test consists of the following parts:
    - you sing one or more melodies (major and minor) that you receive on sheet music
    - you sing major and minor scale figures that are sung or played aloud
    - You play, sing or tap a number of rhythms in different time signatures
    - You name intervals and triads offered to you
    - name notated triads and fourths and a number of scales.

  • At the main instrument admission test (your main instrument can also be singing), the teacher taking the test will check what level you have on your main instrument. This test takes the form of a trial lesson at the conservatory and takes place before the admission day. An appointment will be made by the teacher with you for a lesson.

At the test, you will play your programme and be taught by the relevant teacher. Below is what you need to prepare. The entire test will take about 45 minutes.

Preparation for the admission test main instrument

    · Prepare four instrumental pieces to be performed on your main instrument. The pieces should differ in style, character and expression. Make a video of two pieces, post them on Youtube and upload the link on the ArtEZ registration page. You received the link to the registration page in the email from Student Affairs.

Is singing your main instrument? Then prepare four pieces to show your singing voice. Think for example of a pop song, musical song, classical song, children's song or jazz standard. These songs should also differ in style, character and expression. You accompany yourself on a chord instrument. Make a video of two pieces, put them on YouTube and upload the link on the ArtEZ registration page. You received the link to the registration page in the e-mail from Student Affairs.

    · If you play another instrument besides your main instrument, you may include it in your programme

    · We appreciate it if you have written your own music. Please put it in your program
