After graduation

The Music in Education programme in Zwolle turns out enterprising teachers who are widely employable in music education, both in schools and outside.

Title and diploma

After successfully completing the Music in Education course, you may use the title Bachelor of Music in Education (BEd). This course may be found in the Dutch Central Register of Courses in Higher Education (CROHO) under code 39112. The formal name of the course, under which it is known in CROHO, is Bachelor of Music in Education. This CROHO name will appear on your diploma.

One year after graduating, I got a permanent contract with Meander College in Zwolle. I also teach at the ArtEZ Academy of Music, on my old course. In addition, I play as a musician in various bands and ensembles in the evenings and at weekends and I conduct a number of choirs.

JASPER VAN DER DEEN, ALUMNUS

Starting work

Your diploma gives you a first-degree teaching qualification in the subjects music, general art and cultural and artistic education. This means you can go in all kinds of different directions. You can work as a music teacher in formal education. You can also work at a music school or set up your own, or become a choir conductor or ensemble leader. Or you can write music methods, work for the educational service of an orchestra, ensemble or opera company or set up socio-artistic projects as a freelancer. In recent years, all the students who have completed the Music in Education course have found jobs, many as teachers in secondary education; there are still plenty of vacancies in this field. But many graduates also find work on a self-employed basis, by being enterprising within the wider music-educational field and by creating their own work with choirs, companies, cultural enterprises, startups and existing cultural providers. As a new music teacher, you will mainly be applying for part-time positions.

Continuing your studies?

After the Bachelor of Music in Education course, you can also continue your studies, for example with the ArtEZ Master of Education in Arts or Master of Artist Educator.
