Music in Education



ArtEZ is looking for musicians who wish to inspire and further develop others through their enthusiasm and artistry.

Music in Education admission criteria

  • Applicants must have completed VWO, HAVO, MBO (level 4) or the equivalent.
  • International students must meet certain language requirements.
  • Applicants must provide a letter of motivation and present the group music assignment
  • Applicants must have successfully completed the entrance examination (admission day and music theory exam). During the entrance examination, we assess your chances of completing the course successfully.

Language requirements

All our courses have language requirements. You will need to prove your language proficiency by handing in a certificate stating your level. The level for Music in Education is:

          • B2, before 31 August. If you need a residence permit to study at ArtEZ, the delivery deadline is 31 May.

Vocal and instrumental admission criteria

  • you are able to improvise and play your own music on your instrument and/or with your singing voice
  • you possess performing qualities and demonstrable music performance experience
  • you have a good voice with development potential, both in terms of singing and speaking

For the entrance examination, you should prepare the following:

1. Four instrumental pieces played on your main instrument

  • The pieces must differ in style, character and expression. For example, if you play a classical main instrument you prepare an etude, part of a sonata, a contemporary work or a baroque piece. With light music you prepare a standard, a pop song, a ballad or a blues improvisation. So within your music style classic or light you perform different style periods or styles.
  • If your voice is your main instrument (Singing major), you will sing with musical accompaniment. The number of pieces you must prepare remains the same.
  • If, in addition to your main instrument, you play another instrument, you may incorporate it into your programme.
  • If you have written your own piece of music, then we would certainly like to hear it.

2. Four songs

  • The songs must differ in style, character and expression – from a pop song to a classical piece, from a children’s song to a lyrical song.  
  • You may accompany yourself on the guitar or piano, even if that is not your main instrument.
  • If you have written your own song, then we would love to hear it as one of your pieces.

Music Theory admission criteria

During the theoretical admission you will be tested on a number of components by a music theory lecturer. In particular, the lecturer will test whether your music theory skills can be developed. It is not a question of mastering everything perfectly, but of showing that you have basic knowledge and skills that can be developed to the desired level during your training. Pedagogical / didactic skills admission criteria

  • You are able to come up with a good music assignment
  • You are able to communicate this to a group
  • You are able to deal with a group
  • You have an agreeable leadership style
  • You have an eye for the talents of the participants
  • You communicate well

Motivation form and group music assignment

After you have registered for the course, you will receive a motivation form. Fill this in and take it along with you to the entrance examination. You will also complete a group music assignment on paper before the entrance examination. Think of a music group assignment which you would be able to perform within 10-15 minutes with a group of 8-12 individuals. This could include the rehearsal of a song, a small choir piece, an instrumental or a percussion piece, a tuned percussion piece or a musical movement piece. Bring the necessary materials along with you to the examination, such as sheet music or a text with chord symbols.

Entrance examination

The entrance examination takes place in June and consists of an admission day.

1. Admission day

At the beginning of the day, you will hand in the following to the committee:

  • the completed motivation form
  • the prepared group music assignment
  • the programme with the prepared instrumental pieces and songs, including the sheet music

A large part of the day will be taken up with group assignments. The committee looks at how you lead a group and how you deal with music. Other admission candidates and a number of students of the third year will participate in these group assignments.

All candidates will also individually play and sing the pieces and songs they have prepared in front of the committee and the other candidates. You will be judged on the development potential of your teaching, playing and singing abilities. During this admission day, a talk will be held with you together with the other candidates about your experiences with music and art/culture education. The committee may ask you to perform a short improvisation.

2. Music theory exam

We start with an individual oral test:

  • You sing one or more melodies from sheet music.
  • You repeat major and minor scale figures sung or played for you.
  • You also repeat some chordal tones. A number of chords are played in different structures.
  • Singing is a key component of the Music in Education course. Besides singing you will also perform a number of rhythms in different times.

After the oral test you will sit a written test:

  • In this test you will identify a number of intervals and triads you hear.
  • You will take a few short melody and rhythm tests.
  • You identify notated triads and tetrads and a number of scales.

After these tests we have an idea of where you stand in terms of music theory, hearing and ability to develop.

Result and validity

Following the entrance examination, the admissions committee will offer a recommendation to the examination committee of the Academy of Music. This committee will check to ensure the procedure was carried out correctly and will determine whether you will be admitted. You will receive notification of this in writing.

Admission is only valid for the course for which you have enrolled. When you are admitted or rejected for the Music in Education course, then that is binding for both locations (Enschede and Zwolle). The admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance examination. Should you wish to start a year later, you can apply to the examination committee with a written request for the validity of the results to be extended up to one year.

If you disagree with a negative result of the admissions procedure, you can appeal to the examination committee.

Enrolment and fees

Enrolment is done through Studielink before 1 May. Enrolments after 1 May will only be processed if a sufficient number of study spaces are still available. You will then receive information on the entrance examination and the date that you are expected at the academy.
