Course

Course

This fast track double degree programme bachelor's/master's Education in Arts consists partly of a curriculum that prepares you for the teaching profession, for example through learning about teaching methodologies and doing internships. In addition, you go into art theory in greater depth and thoroughly familiarise yourself with Arts-Based Research.

You learn to reflect deeply and ask pressing questions – including of yourself. You conduct research into social issues and learn to balance between engagement and critical distance, vision and reflection, and between wanting to comprehend and daring to leave incomprehensible.

Year 1: Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made bachelor's course

In the first academic year (from September to July), you follow the regular curriculum of the two-year bachelor’s course Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made Arnhem. During this time, you bring others into contact with art and design, including people for whom that is not an obvious choice. You encourage them to make and to develop their own talent and link in with personal and social issues. You let them experience the difference that art can make and what it is like to express what is on your mind. Classes are taught on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.15 AM – 4.30 PM. Internships are possible on those teaching days and are arranged through the internship agency.

Subjects

The teaching programme is based on a core curriculum of theoretical and education subjects which are taken in study groups. Subjects include learning psychology and educational theory, developmental psychology, teaching methods, art and cultural history, current affairs, photography, art theory, philosophy and research skills. You gain knowledge about learning, specific target groups and social psychology, but also about developing lessons, teaching materials and methods. And you also embark on your first internship.

The course curriculum offers a broad and in-depth basis, with more and more opportunities to tailor the subjects to your personal preferences. You study with students of different ages and backgrounds, with the key similarity being that everyone has completed a course to become an artist or a designer. This diversity of experience, training and artistic practices adds an extra dimension to the course.

Year 2: Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made/Education in Arts

For the first six months of year 2 (from November to February), you follow subjects from the Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made curriculum on Tuesdays and Friday. Subjects you can expect in this period are social psychology and culture, art theory didactics and philosophy. In addition, you start keeping a logbook, have tutor interviews with a lecturer from the Education in Arts master's course and write up your final research for your bachelor's course in the form of an essay.

If you have successfully completed the theoretical research for your bachelor's course and you are given the go ahead to do the master's programme, you join the Education in Arts master's course, starting with module 3 of the curriculum. You will have classes in Zwolle every Monday.

Module 3:

In module 3, you immerse yourself further in your role as an artisteducator and change-maker. You do so by setting up and conducting a (small) research project aimed at bringing about change or transformation. In this module, the focus is on working with other research partners to develop a research project plan. You explore and experiment with different arts-based and action-oriented research methods. Besides designing a research project, you also design artistic-educational interventions and (partially) implement them. You work with visual reflection techniques, with film as a fixed element. Project management skills and interdisciplinary cooperation are also covered in this module.

“This abridged route was exactly what I was looking for. For me it is the perfect way of combining the artist in me with the teaching profession. I am looking to go into more depth and above all I want to explore what I really want to get across during my photography classes.”

Year 3: Education in Arts master's course

In the third year (March to June) of this combined programme, you follow the regular curriculum of the Education in Arts master's course.

Module 4:

In module 4, you deepen the (arts-based) research process you began in module 3, exploring different qualitative research methodologies in more depth. You express your artistic-educational research (process) and the results in a report/document in a medium of your choice, reflecting critically on the implementation, results and insights gained. Module 4 is the prelude to graduation, because all the content, techniques, information, explanations and exploration of phase 2 contribute to the development and refinement of your positioning as an artisteducator with your own authentic signature. During the module, you present your research (results) to representatives of the professional field.

Module 5 & 6: Reasoned interventions in practice

During modules 5 and 6, the focus shifts to your own research question. You conduct an artistic-educational research project at your place of work in practice. This project marks the end of your course. At the same time, it serves as the starting point for everything that follows. You take the skills and insights you have acquired during your master's course with you into your daily activities, along with the open and inquiring attitude with which you have learned to encounter the world.

The emphasis in this second phase is on Arts-Based Research: different research methods are combined in order to explore and answer a question from different perspectives. By taking different approaches, you combine the best of both worlds, which can lead to the most unexpected and valuable results.

Partners and cooperation

The master’s course has a core team of experienced lecturers and works with renowned and diverse national and international guest lecturers and external partners. Together they provide a rich programme, packed with exchanges, excursions, seminars and conference visits. The Education in Arts master's course has multiple overlaps with the international Master Artist Educator (iMAE). As such, during the year there is occasional collaboration with the iMAE master’s students: for instance, the programme includes an excursion to Belfast in Northern Ireland, where the iMAE students spend several months working on their projects. Other relevant partners and collaborations of the Education in Arts master's course include:

Internships

As part of Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made, you follow internal internships in both the first and second years. You learn how you can work with different target groups within the education sector as a teacher. Internal internships range from primary and secondary education to VET. During the master's (i.e. the final phase of the combined programme), you contribute to different projects which count towards your external internship. Both Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made and the Education in Arts master's course have a lot of contacts with the professional field, and as a result are well placed to offer good internship positions.

Exemptions

Because you are completing two part-time courses in three years, exemptions are offered for certain subjects of both courses. The subjects you are exempted from for Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made are primarily the visual subjects.

What else you need to know.

You do the first phase (Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made) in Arnhem. Classes are taught on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.15 AM – 4.30 PM. You do the second phase (Education in Arts) in Zwolle. There you have one regular class day per week, on a Monday. That day consists of between 6 and 10 contact hours. Alongside the contact hours, you need around 10 to 14 hours per week for self-study. Of course the actual workload can vary depending on the student and the period. It is also good to bear in mind that you will be making three different excursions: in year 1 you go on a three-day trip abroad, in year 2 you go on a two-day trip within the Netherlands and in the third year you spend five days abroad.

Who is this combined programme for?

Because this combined programme is offered part-time, there are many students who combine it with a job and a family. Basically, these are students who want to gain both a master's degree and a full teaching qualification. Among others, the abridged study programme is aimed at autonomous visual artists and designers who have completed an art degree in Fine Art or Design at university of applied sciences level.

The abridged route is ideal for ambitious students with an open and inquiring attitude and an innovative mindset. During the final year and a half of the Education in Arts master's course in particular, you engage in intensive dialogue with other students and with yourself. In an ongoing process, you define your position by continually reflecting on your own actions, by making, by doing and by researching. Bit by bit, and ever more vigorously, you solidify your position, justify why you stand where you stand and why you do what you do.

If you run into problems, you have a study career coach (during Fine Art and Design in Education tailor-made) and a personal tutor (during the Education in Arts master's course) to provide support when you need it, both in terms of course content and process.

Cost

For this abridged combined route, you only have to pay the statutory tuition fee once every academic year. If you have not previously followed a teacher training course or a course in care, in most cases you will pay the statutory tuition fee of €2143. Use the ArtEZ tuition fees calculator to quickly determine whether this rate applies to you. In addition to the tuition fee, please allow for the cost of books and materials and money for excursions. As a part-time student, you can apply for a contribution towards the cost of a teacher training course from DUO. If you are already working in education, you may qualify for a teacher’s grant
