Music Theatre: things you just can't put into words

Still from Master Music Theatre student Tom Jaspers's final project, Kintsugi

“For me, music theatre is about creating a performance in which the two elements music and theatre come together and are equal.” Tom Jaspers explains in a video what makes the Master Music Theatre so special for him. “Music can tell a story just like an actor can tell a story using words. It becomes interesting when an actor uses his voice to evoke emotion from the audience.”

Tom researched the physical reaction or sound that precedes the actual speech. He says, “Theatre triggers emotions in me when the actor is doing something musical. Speech helps to clarify things, but it can also get in the way. There are some things you can’t put into words.” Based on his research, he created an interactive performance. “It’s been quite tough. I gave it my all, and through doing so, it has led me to the craziest places. I felt inspired and discovered wonderful ideas."

The Master Music Theatre in Arnhem is the only master's programme in the music theatre offered in the Netherlands. As a student, you will experience challenging masterclasses from Via Berlin, you get started with your work through projects with our partners Orkater and Orkest de Ereprijs, and you get access to an international network of professionals. You’ll be encouraged to find your own “DNA” as a creator and performer: what inspires you? What is important to you and how do you want to tell that to people through theater? You get access to all the essential tools to develop your craftsmanship as a music theatre maker.
