New Olympic award to be designed by ArtEZ students
Students from AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Enschede and BEAR Fine Art at ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Arnhem are set to work on the design of a new chapeau figurine. The figurine is an award for Dutch elite athletes who win gold for a second time at a separate Olympic or Paralympic Games. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) has asked ArtEZ to develop design proposals for the award.
New award from 2028
The new design will be introduced at the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Los Angeles and is expected to remain in use until 2042. The chapeau figurine symbolises elite sport, national pride and lasting recognition.
Students from different disciplines
The project is open to students from different disciplines. At AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Enschede, students from Fine Art, Crossmedia Design and Moving Image can sign up. At ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Arnhem, the design brief will be shared with students from BEAR Fine Art. As part of the interdisciplinary project group, participating students will receive guidance while developing their proposals. They will take part in several meetings and feedback sessions, after which a shortlist of designs will be selected.
From ArtEZ to The Hague
Around five proposals will be selected from the submitted designs. These will be presented to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport during a pitch in autumn 2026.
