Graphic Design alumnus brings stories of LGBTQIA+ people from rural communities to life

Being gay and living in a small village can sometimes feel lonely. This is something alumnus Rémon Westendorp from Buurse experienced firsthand. For his graduation project, he spoke with other LGBTQIA+ people who also live in rural communities. He shared more about his project on the NOS Radio 1 Journaal.

“I noticed quite a lot of loneliness in my own village. That was the reason for me to draw attention to this issue, conduct research and give people a voice,” Rémon explains. In his own community, he experienced how difficult it can be to find like-minded people. This applied not only to relationships, but also to friendships and social connections.

In conversations with LGBTQIA+ people from different villages, Rémon heard many stories he could relate to. With his graphic installation Deel van Mij (A Part of Me), he wants to make these stories visible and show that LGBTQIA+ people are also an integral part of rural communities.
