Werkplaats Typografie presents project at NY Art Book Fair in New York

The Werkplaats Typografie masters' programme at ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Arnhem will present MAY I REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY from 24 to 27 September at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair in New York. The project consists of seventeen invitations, each taking a different form and appearing at various locations across the city.

In MAY I REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY, Werkplaats Typografie explores the invitation as a personal form of communication. The title comes from a postcard sent from New York to Rudi Oxenaar, then director of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Arnhem, in 1983. The postcard invited him to the reopening of a gallery run by Holly and Horace Solomon. Years later, the postcard became the starting point for Werkplaats Typografie’s project.

As part of the project, seventeen invitations take different forms and appear at various locations across New York. The invitations connect different places and moments throughout the city and invite encounters. An accompanying publication brings the seventeen invitations together.

Werkplaats Typografie is ArtEZ’s two-year master’s programme in graphic design. Participants work independently and collaboratively on research and projects that bring together design, text, image and publishing. International presentations and collaborations are part of the programme’s practice.

Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair is an international fair for artists’ books, independent publications and graphic design. MAY I REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY is part of the programme for the 2026 edition.
