What you will learn during the Preparatory Music Course

Making music at a high level and everything you need to prepare for the entrance examination to the Bachelor's programme; it's all in the Music Preparatory Programme.

You will train your musical skills and receive guidance and information to help you progress musically. This includes main subject lessons on your instrument or singing, participating in recital evenings and being part of the working days (you can read more about this below). You will also receive lessons in music theory. All lessons are given by conservatoire teachers.

In one year you will learn how things work at the ArtEZ Conservatoire and whether a study at the conservatoire is something for you. Taking the Preparatory Course in Music does not guarantee admission to a bachelor's degree programme, but the lessons given by conservatoire teachers can increase your chances of getting one. In any case, they provide the best possible preparation for the entrance examination.

During 30 weeks of lessons, you will improve your skills in composition and music theory in addition to music production. You will be challenged to write in several different styles and genres and work with live musicians who will learn, perform and record your works. All this will give you the opportunity, within the preparatory course, to compile a diverse portfolio with which you can give admission exams.

Admission

  • To be admitted to the Preparatory Music Programme with Jazz & Pop as direction, you will do an audition equivalent to a Bachelor Jazz & Pop audition. During this audition, we will also check whether you are eligible for admission to the Bachelor's programme. If you are eligible for the Bachelor Jazz & Pop, it is no longer possible to take part in the preparatory course. If you have already passed an entrance exam for the Bachelor with a negative result, it is unfortunately no longer possible to apply for the Preparatory Music Programme. For more information on how this audition proceeds, see the admissions page of the Bachelor Jazz & Pop Arnhem.

In order for your ensemble playing to be assessed, it is compulsory to audition with band accompaniment consisting of a minimum of 2 people. Auditioning with only a karaoke/backing track, solo or duo is not allowed.

If you are unable to bring your own accompaniment, it is possible to hire ArtEZ students. You can request this during your registration. Click here for more info on hiring the ArtEZ student band.

  • You will be invited to audition in June, where you will give us an impression of your current level and development through the means of your chosen programme. Your programme for the instrument or vocal audition must conform to the programme requirements listed on the Bachelor Classical Music admission page.

  • The admission requirements for the new preparatory course will be available here shortly.

  • Before the admission audition, you will turn in a digital presentation folder. For more information on how the audition works, please see the admissions page for the Bachelor Music Theatre.
