What does the Centre of Expertise do?

The Centre of Expertise: Future Makers in Fashion & Design aims to develop new, sustainable materials and creative processes that can be applied in Fashion & Design. This results in high-profile projects such as the design of jeans from recycled material or the Crafting Wearables project.

Lucie Huiskens is the programme manager for Future Makers. More information on the website futuremakers.artez.nl

Collaboration

To achieve its objectives, the CoE has joined forces with the Fashion professorship, the Product & Interior Design professorship and the Art Business Centre of ArtEZ. Together, they actively seek collaboration with business partners.

Collaboration within the creative industries provides high-profile projects such as:

  • the designing of jeans from recycled material: a joint venture between German and Dutch knowledge institutes and companies
  • the ‘Crafting Wearables’ research project: developing ‘smart wearables’ through collaboration between ArtEZ, Radboud University and the TU/Eindhoven collaborate with companies such as Philips, Xsense and the Textielmuseum
  • the project ‘Virtuele Verwachting Fysieke Beleving’ (Virtual Expectation Physical Experience): working on the future of retail in collaboration with Saxion, HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Piet Zoomers and Nedap.

Joining forces within the Centre of Expertise also means our creative industry network, which has been being built since 2012, has been further strengthened. For example, the Fashion professorship played a defining role regarding the CLICKNL/NextFashion agenda for the last three years within the top sector Creative Industry and works closely with other knowledge institutes and companies on research and innovation.

Internationally renowned ArtEZ alumni, such as Iris van Herpen and Pauline van Dongen, illustrate the great value of this through their work. The Centre of Expertise: Future Makers in Fashion & Design came about with the support of the province of Gelderland, the municipality of Arnhem and Stichting Innovatie Alliantie.
