Application and admissionIf you want to join the Illustration Based Narrative masters programme, start by applying for admission. Read the step-by-step guide to learn how it works and what to expect. Here you’ll also find key dates and deadlines, plus practical tips to help you prepare for the admissions process.
To apply for this programme, you'll need to register through Studielink. Before you do, please read the admission procedure for the Master Illustration Based Narrative below. You can also check the general information about admission at ArtEZ.
Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email from ArtEZ Student Affairs. The program itself will then send you more information about the admission process.

Admission requirements
To apply for the Master Illustration Based Narrative, you must meet the following criteria:

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in illustration (such as illustration, animation, comics, or other related fields with a more research-oriented focus, such as journalism or visual anthropology). Applicants with a bachelor’s in another discipline are also welcome; the admissions committee will assess the relevance of your prior studies and experience.

A positive result in the admission interview.

A diploma or certificate proving the required English language proficiency (see the general language requirements for English-taught master’s programs at ArtEZ).

The admission process: step by step
Step 1: Register via Studielink
You must first register through Studielink and upload the following documents:

A copy of your passport

A copy of your bachelor’s degree (preferably in English, with transcript of records) if available

Proof of English language proficiency
These documents must be uploaded before the start of the academic year. If you require a residence permit, the deadline is May 31.
Step 2: Submit additional documents
After registering in Studielink, you will be asked to submit your portfolio, CV, motivation letter, and research proposal. You will receive more detailed instructions by email. Below you’ll already find some guidelines:

Submit as a PDF file

Max. 20 projects, max. 20 MB

Provide a clear overview of your work and skills

Include descriptions of the research and process behind your projects

CV: should include your previous education, relevant work experience, and skills/interests both within and beyond illustration and visual storytelling.

Motivation letter: briefly explain why you want to study Illustration Based Narrative, your plans and expectations for the program, how you see yourself as an illustrator, why you fit the program, and what you aim to achieve with this master’s.

Research proposal: max. one A4 in which you outline the type of research you wish to carry out during the program, formulating a research question and describing the topic and approach.
Step 3: Admission interview
Based on your submitted documents, the admissions committee decides whether to invite you for an interview. During the conversation, your potential to successfully complete the program is assessed.
Step 4: Admission and enrolment
Within two weeks after the interview, you will be informed of the outcome. If you are admitted, you will receive instructions on how to complete your enrolment. Admission is valid only for the academic year immediately following the admission interview.
Additional costs
Please note that in addition to tuition fees, you will be charged extra costs for the Travel Modules, which are a mandatory part of the curriculum. These costs are approximately €500 per year. You should also budget for materials for your work and research. The amount will depend on the materials you choose.
