If you are considering taking the Music in Education course, a visit to the ArtEZ finals, in which final exam students demonstrate their work, or to the music production (in May/June) is highly recommended. You can also visit the annual open day or sign up for an orientation day.

For the entrance examination, you prepare the following:

  • Work out an assignment that you can do in ten to fifteen minutes with a group of five to eight people, including yourself. Think, for example, of rehearsing a song, a small choir piece, an instrumental or rhythm piece, an ensemble or a musical movement performance. Bring the necessary materials, such as sheet music or a text with chord symbols, to the entrance examination.

    • Four instrumental pieces, performed on your main instrument. The pieces should differ in style, character and expression;
    • Four pieces in which you demonstrate your voice. Think, for example, of a pop song, musical song, classical song, children's song or jazz standard;
    • If you play another instrument in addition to your programme, you are free to integrate it into your programme;
    • If you have written a piece of music of your own, we look forward to hearing it.
    • Six songs. These should differ in style, character and expression;
    • In at least two of the six pieces you accompany yourself on a chord instrument;
    • If you play another instrument in addition to your programme, you are free to integrate it into your programme;
    • If you have written a song of your own, we would love to hear it.
  • Prepare for a conversation about your knowledge, experience and vision of the subjects of Culture and Arts and General Art.

Entrance examination

At ArtEZ we already have the final goal in mind at the time of the entrance examination: to deliver the best music teachers. Of course for the profession of music teacher you have to be musical, have a fairly good voice, play one or more instruments and be able to accompany yourself on a chord instrument. But we do not train you to be an artist. It is all about having sufficient basic qualities to be able to develop to the desired level during your training to be able to teach music in a meaningful way. The entrance examination takes place on one day. We test:

  • Your ability to develop your musical skills;
  • The quality and development potential of your singing and speaking voice; • Your ability to come up with a musical assignment and offer it to a group; • Your ability to interact with a group. Are you a pleasant leader? Do you have an eye for the participants' qualities? How communicative are you? At the beginning of the day you hand over the following to the committee:
  • The detailed musical group assignment;
  • The programme with the prepared instrumental pieces and songs and the sheet music.

The entrance examination consists of:

  • See above

  • The morning is filled with group assignments. An assessment committee, consisting of a number of main-subject teachers and students, looks at how you lead a group. Other admission candidates and a few students take part in the group assignments. Then all candidates play and sing the pieces and songs they have prepared, in the presence of the admission committee and the other candidates. You will also have a conversation with the other candidates about your experiences with music education and art and cultural education. The committee may ask you to perform a short improvisation.

  • This test is taken individually during the working day and takes about twenty minutes.

  • In an interview with the committee, your knowledge, experience and vision of the subjects of Culture and Arts and General Art will be examined.

    At the end of the day you will hear whether you qualify for admission.

Result and validity

After the entrance examination, the admission committee advises the ArtEZ Academy of Music's Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners checks that the procedure was followed properly and ultimately determines whether you are to be admitted. The result will be communicated to you in writing.

A positive admission result is only valid for the course you applied for. Admission or rejection for the Music in Education course is binding for both ArtEZ locations (Enschede and Zwolle). The admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance examination. Should you wish to start one year later, you can submit a written request to the Board of Examiners to prolong the validity of the results for a period of one year.

If you do not agree with the negative result because of the procedure followed, you can lodge a complaint with the Board of Examiners.

Optimally prepared for the entrance examination

If you wish to prepare for the entrance examination, come to the open day on the third Saturday in November. You can do an admission test. In addition, you can choose from one of the preparatory courses at ArtEZ Connected. This will increase your chances of being admitted to the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede. You can choose between an all-inclusive preparatory course, an external preparatory course at one of our partner schools, an online preparatory course and a crash course in music theory.
