#finalsfriday 5: The stories behind the work

ArtEZ finals is the perfect time to explore, experience, and listen to our students' work. This week, we're excited to share the stories behind their creations – the stories of the students themselves. How did they experience studying at ArtEZ? What will they take away after graduation? And what advice do they have for aspiring students? This finals friday we give you a sneak preview. Read it all in the ArtEZ finals stories.

Using comic design to touch heart

I wanted to tell their stories, they work there illegally, experience a lot of fear and aren’t accepted. Through SWEAT, an organisation providing legal support to sex workers, I arranged an interview with one of the sex workers there. I shared my intentions and showed drawings for my book. She thought the drawings were very appropriate and she conformed I did a good job to pay attention to this issue."

Drawing is a way for Nova de Hoo (22) to express herself. During the Comic Design course, she learned how to share her work with the world and talk about it. “I don’t have to show a ‘finished’ product first. The process leading up to it is much more important”, says Nova.

Student Eleni Christofi from Cyprus found her passion in Enschede

In the hospital in Curaçao, I experienced how important it is to achieve something in one session. You never know how long a child will stay. Many times, I would start something with a client, and the next day, they would suddenly be gone. I couldn't properly conclude my sessions.”

Eleni Christofi, a Music Therapy student, developed a method where I write a song together with the child in one session. The child gets to choose a theme and then come up with words that fit within that. "Afterwards, we create sentences and then add music," explains Eleni. "By the end of the session, the child has created their own song."

The dance artist as a sceptic

We’re lucky that the Dance Artist course already gets us involved in the community. It’s really nice to be able to step out of ArtEZ while still being in school."

Sofia Norman, a third year bachelor Dance Artist student, has found her own creative voice through movement in the bachelor Dance Artist. Her finals performance embodied her new philosophy: question everything. “This programme has taught me to question what I thought I knew about being a good dancer and use dance as my craft.”
