Spotted in New Scientist – Sophie Zwertbroek, Creative Writing alumna, won the Robbert Dijkgraaf Essay Prize 2023 on November 22 with her entry ‘Zoektocht naar alles’ (Search for everything). The prize was awarded during the Gala van de Wetenschap 2023 (Science Gala 2023).
“Without art, there would be no science?! Do you know anything about this and are you a good writer?” That was the call from New Scientist and AD. Sophie Zwertbroek knew just what to do. She wrote a powerful entry about how art and science are connected, beating countless Dutch and Belgian entrants to win the competition.

Sophie Zwertbroek (1997) finds it difficult to choose. She writes, draws, and performs. Her texts address a wide range of topics, but are often rooted in philosophy, current events, and science. She has been published in Notulen van het Onzichtbare and in anthologies of the Gedichtenwedstrijd poetry competition. She regularly gives readings, including at the Wintertuinfestival and SLAA. She graduated in 2021 from the Creative Writing program at ArtEZ University of the Arts.
Sophie graduated in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in Creative Writing in Arnhem, where you are given the space to experiment with all kinds of directions: from creating novels to writing for Virtual Reality. This allows you to discover what you want to make your own, what makes your writing heart beat faster, and above all: what being a writer means to you.
