ArtEZ at DIS_SEMINAR #3: Artistic research in practice

In March, DIS_SEMINAR #3 took place in Utrecht, a gathering of the platform Kunst ≈ Onderzoek focused on the dissemination of artistic research. The day brought together artistic research in various stages, from work-in-progress to more developed projects. The programme consisted of presentations, performances, workshops and discussions, in which participants shared knowledge, asked questions and further explored research collectively.

Contribution from ArtEZ

ArtEZ contributed jointly through the Design Professorship, the BA Artisteducator in Dance, and the ArtEZ Platform for Research Interventions of the Arts (APRIA). This contribution focused on the lecture performance as a method within education and research. Students provided a performative contribution, followed by a discussion with lecturers, researchers and participants. Central to this was how this form could function as a way of conducting, sharing and making research open for discussion.

Connecting education and research

The event demonstrated how education and research at ArtEZ are interconnected. Students, lecturers and researchers work together and engage in dialogue with colleagues from other art schools. In this way, a shared practice emerges in which knowledge is developed and exchanged.

Research at ArtEZ

At ArtEZ, active efforts are made to strengthen this connection. Within the BA Artisteducator in Dance, students develop research skills within their own practice. The Design Professorship explores how artistic research methods, such as the lecture performance, relate to design research and how these can be applied more broadly. APRIA supports this by making research visible, facilitating publications and stimulating dialogue on artistic research.

What this means for students

For students, this makes it tangible how research within an art school can take shape: not as a separate component, but as a practice in which making, thinking and reflecting come together. Artistic research thus forms an important way of learning and development within ArtEZ.
