Course
CourseThe four-year Moving Image course in Enschede offers a multidisciplinary course that combines film, video, art and media with a solid theoretical and philosophical basis and a wide range of practical skills.
During the study, you look for new insights in moving images to arrive at new and unfamiliar visual experiments. The principle here is that the world which is created through moving images is completely new and real and is not a representation of something else. You thus develop into an autonomous conceptual image maker who can translate their ideas into innovative projects.
You study in an inspiring and challenging but accessible environment, in which interaction with teachers but particularly with fellow students is vital. The course is small scale and is strongly internationally oriented. We only currently admit a maximum of thirty new students.
Course structure
What do you learn in the Moving Image course at AKI ArtEZ?
In Moving Image, you develop both your intellectual and your creative skills as an image maker. What makes Moving Image a unique course is that the focus not only lies on creating images and any storytelling aspect. You also learn to study and penetrate the essence of Moving Image. You acquire new insights about making images and analysing structures. That leads to new visual experiments which are closely connected with all the senses. This enables you to develop your own image language.
An image is not a passive entity awaiting human scrutiny, but an active force in its own right. It has the power to exert a genuine influence on those who look at it.”
You work with photography, (digital) animation techniques, short live-action films, larger video projects and cinematography. You are also introduced to the basic techniques of editing, video and photography, including making a storyboard, writing and sound design. You learn how to work with light and cameras, editing software, 360-degree cameras and green screen recordings. You do intensive short workshops about acting and working with actors, directing and scriptwriting. In the theory lessons, historical and philosophical knowledge about images, media and film are addressed.

Learn a lot in a short space of time
Learning processes are not linear. That certainly applies to creative processes: sometimes you take weeks to make a small step forwards or you take a step backwards; sometimes you make a huge leap in an hour. The curriculum takes this into account and alternates short periods of intensive theoretical and practical education with longer periods. Sometimes you work alone on projects and productions; at other times you work with others.
Every year consists of two semesters. At the end of each semester, an evaluation of your work takes place. The curriculum alternates practical (technical) subjects with project-based subjects. Through short, intensive assignments with rapid results, you practise your skills. By practising with these, we work towards longer projects. The theory that you are offered corresponds with the projects.
In addition to the projects, assignments and subjects, you do workshops and attend lectures, you visit exhibitions and go on excursions, like to IDFA, Netherlands Film Festival, ZKM Museum (Karlsruhe, Germany), Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), Nordland Art and Film College (Kabelvag, Norway) and New York.
Doing research outside of your regular class hours
When you study at ArtEZ, you also get acquainted with research. Think of theory classes, material research, and socially engaged research. Within your course, there is ample support and space to discover what kind of artistic researcher you are. But outside your regular class hours, there are also special initiatives, activities, and workshops where you can work on research. Especially for students who seek further depth. Curious? Then quickly read more about the (extracurricular) research activities.
Study support
The range of options during the Moving Image course is extensive but leaves enough room for you to make your own choices. During the course, we encourage you to seek out new challenges and adopt a proactive, critical attitude. You teachers and mentor will help you find your own imagery and develop your own creative vision. At least twice per semester, you meet your mentor to discuss your status.
