After graduationIn the part-time Fine Art and Design in Education course in Arnhem, you develop into a broadly trained specialist in the field of art education. When you graduate, you are a professional who is not only highly skilled artistically, but who is also able to make the world of art and culture accessible to all kinds of different people in different places.
Title and diploma
After successfully completing the part-time Fine Art and Design in Education course in Arnhem, you are entitled to use the title of Bachelor of Education (BEd).
This course may be found in the Dutch Central Register of Courses in Higher Education (CROHO) under code 39100. The formal name of the course, under which it is known in CROHO, is Bachelor of Fine Art and Design in Education. This CROHO name will appear on your diploma.
Starting work
After completing the four-year part-time Fine Art and Design in Education course, you have access to a very broad professional field. You can work as an art educator both within and outside mainstream education, either for a business or organisation or as a freelancer. The professional practice is very diverse; many of our alumni work not only as teachers but also as makers, educators or curators. That could be:
- as an artistic director at a contemporary art institution (such as NEST or Nieuw Dakota);
- by setting up your own platform (like RUIS);
- as an educator in a museum (such as the Kröller Müller Museum or Museum Arnhem);
- creating animations (for publications like de Volkskrant);
- programming/curating at art initiatives (such as P-OST, Oddstream, and Studio Omstand);
- as a cultural coach (for example, at the Amsterdam Public Library, Broedsels, or Makers on the Move);
- as a writer and editor-in-chief (at Mister Motley); or
- as an education advisor (at CultuurOost).
Working in education
Within mainstream education, you can work in primary education, special needs education, the first phase of secondary education, the senior years of preparatory middle-level vocational education (VMBO) and the second phase of secondary education/preparatory higher education (VHO). You can work as a teacher of visual arts, but also, for example, as a teacher of cultural and artistic studies, general art, art history, media design or drawing. In addition, as a qualified teacher of visual arts and design, you will be entitled to teach at secondary and higher vocational (MBO and HBO) level. Your diploma is a broad teaching qualification.
Art education outside mainstream education
With your diploma, you can also work in the field of art education. Within the institutions in this field, you can perform policy-making, coordinating or more executive roles. These could include: museums, cultural institutions, artists' initiatives, festivals and online platforms.
Continuing your studies?
After the Fine Art and Design in Education course, you can take various master courses. For example, Art History, Education in Arts or IMAE (International Master Artist Educator). For some masters, you first have to complete a premaster.
