Admission

For the MediaMusic course, ArtEZ is looking for enterprising students who will use the course to make their ambitions a reality.

MediaMusic admission criteria

  • Applicants must have completed VWO, HAVO, MBO (level 4) or the equivalent.
  • International students must meet certain language requirements.
  • Applicants must provide a motivation letter including their own original productions.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed the entrance examination (intake interview and theory exam). During the entrance examination, we assess your chances of completing the study programme successfully.

Language requirements

All our courses have language requirements. You will need to prove your language proficiency by handing in a certificate stating your level. The level for MediaMusic is:

  • A2 by the end of the 1 st year.

Check exemptions and language courses.

Assessing your chances
We would like to know how experienced you are regarding music production and what your current skill level is. We also want to see how fast you can use music software and hardware and ascertain your general music knowledge and musicality. We are also interested in your plans for the future and how you will use your studies to achieve these. You do not need to be experienced in every area; the important thing is that there you have a solid foundation and that you are able to learn relatively quickly.
As a basis for this bachelor, you may attend to the external preparatory programme Film Scoring and Production at the musicube academy in Bonn.

Music theory admission criteria

See an overview of the theory exam criteria.

Begin honing your skills in the areas of solfeggio, sight-singing, musical notation, reading and writing rhythms and hearing harmonies well in advance. You should also train your knowledge of general music theory. We have developed training material in the form of two special online tools:

Motivation letter and two original productions

After enrolling, the Educational Office will sent you a link for uploading at least two of your own original productions, preferably in very different styles, for instance dance, metal, tango, and music video.

You must also upload a motivation letter in which you clarify the following:

  • What is your future career ambition and how will you use your study to achieve this ambition?
  • What are your special characteristics that could benefit the department and other students?

After the productions have been determined to be sufficient, you will be invited for the entrance examination. For questions please contact the Educational Office in Enschede: conservatorium.enschede@artez.nl.

Entrance examination

The entrance examinations take place between March and July. You will be notified in advance about the exact date and time. The entrance examination consists of two parts:

Intake interview

You will have an intake interview of 30 minutes, including:

  • A test of your ability to work with software and hardware.
  • A test of your keyboard or piano skills. It is an advantage if you possess basic skills in playing piano or keyboard.
  • An interview on the basis of your motivation letter and productions.

Theory exam

An oral music theory exam will be held once your intake interview and productions are determined to be sufficient. This exam will take 15 to 30 minutes.

During the theory exam you will be tested on your musicality and sound memory on the basis of various components (melody, harmony, rhythm and groove). We pay particular attention to your current experience and your development opportunities. In addition, you will be tested on other things, such as notation (reading and writing melodies and rhythms) and general music theory.

Result and validity

At the end of the entrance examination, the admission committee, consisting of at least two lecturers, will make a recommendation to the examination committee of the ArtEZ Academy of Music. This committee will assess your performance and decide whether you are a suitable candidate. You may be placed on a waiting list. You will receive the final result in writing.

Admission is only valid for the course for which you have enrolled. If you wish to apply for admission to a course or specialisation at another location you must register for this separately. The admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance examination. Should you wish to start a year later, you can apply to the examination committee with a written request for the validity of the results to be extended up to one year.

If you disagree with a negative result of the admissions procedure, you can appeal to the examination committee.

Enrolment

Enrolment is done through Studielink before 1 May. Enrolments after 1 May will only be processed if a sufficient number of study spaces are still available. You will then receive information on the entrance examination and the date that you are expected at the academy.
