Besides the display of works on the big screen, the festival consists of introductions, interactive events, presentations and an exhibition of VR art and a game in the foyer.

World building

The theme of this edition of Media Arts Festival Arnhem (MAFA) is World Building: the art of creating fictional worlds. These new worlds offer the possibility to escape from reality, to dream about an ideal world that can never be achieved or, on the contrary, to imagine a feasible future. The festival addresses the philosophical and substantive aspects of the theme as well as the concrete, technical filmmaking.

Programma Media Arts Festival Arnhem

The Media Arts Festival Arnhem (MAFA) is an annual event at Focus Filmtheater that showcases the latest developments in visual culture. Besides two film blocks with works by ArtEZ students and alumni, guest curators Donna Verheijden and Romke Faber each present a programme of their own. The language of the programmes is English.

Enjoy a day full of media art, talks with makers and VR installations at Focus Filmtheater.

About Museum Arnhem

Museum Arnhem renews and expands. The museum building on the Utrechtseweg will reopen in the spring of 2022. A spectacular new wing designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects is currently under construction. The renovation of the museum can be followed live on museumarnhem.nl/nieuwbouw. Or view the renovation from the itinerary at Utrechtseweg 87, open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00.

Over Focus Filmtheater

Focus Filmtheater moved to Audrey Hepburnplein in 2018, in the heart of the city, between Arnhem icons such as the Eusebius Church, the Sint Jansbeek and Rozet. In five film theatres and an open-air theatre on the roof, Focus offers a varied selection of current films and special events. Under the same roof as the film theatre, you will find the spacious and atmospheric Focus | Eten + Drinken pub, which in just a few years has grown into a cultural meeting place for a diverse audience.
