From Kunstbende Gelderland to dancing around the world

In 2016, Romy won Kunstbende Gelderland in the Dance category. By doing so, against all expectations Romy reached the final of the national Kunstbende competition. She is currently working on her graduation performance for the Dance in Education bachelor course in Arnhem. How does she look back on her route from Kunstbende to ArtEZ? And where will we be seeing Romy in the future?

From Kunstbende Gelderland to dancing around the world

Kunstbende: against all expectations

When Romy took part in Kunstbende Gelderland, she was in the first year of her intermediate vocational (MBO) course in Zutphen. Romy performed with two classmates and it went surprisingly well: “We came first, which we really hadn't expected! After that, we went on to the final in Tivoli Vredenburg. That was a real experience. It was great to see all kinds of different artists and performers. And I learned what it felt like to be on stage.

After Kunstbende and completing my MBO course, I wanted more. To be on stage more, but also to share my passion for dance with others. Which is why I chose Dance in Education. The experience with Kunstbende helped me get into ArtEZ: from the experience of being on stage to getting to know other artists and disciplines."

Sharing a passion for dance

Romy is in the fourth year of the Dance in Education bachelor, a course on which you learn to share your passion for dance with others – after graduation, you can go into teaching yourself. “You can teach anyone! And anyone really does mean anyone. You learn all kinds of things on the course: from working pedagogically and didactically to dancing yourself."

“What’s special about ArtEZ is that it's one big family. It's lovely spending time together. You can knock on anyone's door, which makes for a great atmosphere for learning."

Kunstbende spoke to Romy at ArtEZ:

Dancing around the world

For her research and graduation from the bachelor course Dance in Education, Romy Houwers spent three months in Curaçao, learning how to work with diverse audiences. That sparked something in Romy: “After graduating, I'm going to go on a world trip. On my world trip, I want to teach a dance lesson and take a dance lesson in every country I visit. That way, I hope to grow my network so that I can make my way in the world of dance.”

“At ArtEZ, I have developed as a teacher and as a person."
