VisionMusic theatre calls for independent makers who are able to initiate total narratives on both a small and a large scale. The Music Theatre master’s course is focused on contemporary and experimental music theatre. As a master's student, we ask you to define your place in the professional field and to think about every choice in your work and way of working in conceptual terms.
Music theatre is a performing arts discipline with music composition, text, acting and stage design as equal elements. Music and musicality are a dramaturgical component and are jointly responsible for the content. In this way, music theatre differentiates itself from for example stage play or a concert.l
Strongly connected to the work field
The Music Theatre master's course is strongly connected with practice. The course works closely with various renowned music and theatre institutions.
- Orkest De Ereprijs is the leading ensemble for new music in the eastern Netherlands and emphasises interdisciplinarity, education, talent development and innovation.
- The Sonnevanck youth theatre institution makes music theatre with solid content and an adventurous approach for children, young people, their families and friends.
- Via Berlin makes music theatre performances about personal, relatable stories that symbolise universal and societal themes.
- De Nieuwe Oost supports promising newmakers and develops refreshingly different projects and performances for audiences in the Netherlands and abroad.
As a student, you will gain a unique insight into the projects and processes of these partner institutions. You can get stuck into research or a project on location, or work as a director's assistant. The partners also support the mission of the master's course, and will provide input for your development as a student.
Studying at home and abroad
The Music Theatre master's course means studying without boundaries: you will be challenged to break through dividing lines between different disciplines and areas of study. Your audience may consist of both Arnhem residents and people from the other side of the world. You can structure the individual programme as you wish: with Music Theatre and Academy of Music subjects, or with classes and projects outside ArtEZ, at home and abroad.
