Course

To allow others to experience what it is like to make art and to look at art properly, that is only possible if you are a maker yourself. As such, developing your artistic skills and those of your role as a teacher go hand in hand, throughout the course.  

There is also a part-time version of Fine Art and Design in Education (duration: four years). And for those who already have a degree in art education and also want to obtain a first-level teaching qualification, there is a tailor-made programme (duration: two years). The studies can also be undertaken in Arnhem. 

You can read below what the full-time study looks like from year to year. 

Course structure

  • Exploration
    Exploration and orientation, that is the goal in the first year of the course. This is why all aspects of the subject are already covered in the first year. About half the time you work in studios on your own visual skills. You will also take subjects such as education, art and cultural history and philosophy.      

    Field orientation 
    We will go on school visits in secondary education. This means that you will not immediately serve your internship, but you get to know school education step by step. In various inspiration sessions, we also explore the field (cultural or educational institutions). Here you get the chance to speak to the people who already work there. In the second year, you will do an internship. 

    Overseas excursion 
    Together with all first-year students of the Academy of Art & Design in Zwolle, lecturers and mentor students from the second year, you will go on an excursion to Berlin. There you will immerse yourself in the culture and the city's history, and visit museums, art spaces and artists' projects. 

    Projects 
    During the Winter Lab project, together with students of Music in Education, Theatre in Education and the Academy of Art and Design, you will look for answers to social issues, in relation to a bad neighbourhood, for example. Winter Lab lasts a week and is supervised by artists. 

    Research Art Together (RAT) is research into didactics that takes up 9 teaching days in the year. On those days you will work in groups with other students from teacher training programmes on didactic issues. 

    The first year is concluded with the Summer Lab project. All students of the Zwolle Academy of Art & Design work for a week in small groups at different locations in the Netherlands, under the supervision of a visual artist or designer.

  • On the way to practice
    In the second year, you will continue with visual art techniques and materials and with the subjects of art history, cultural history and philosophy. You extend your knowledge, hone your skills and gradually discover what suits you.

    Internship
    In the second semester you will do an internship in secondary education two days a week. We don't throw you in immediately at the deep end, but offer intensive supervision throughout the internship. You will learn to teach, work on your pedagogical-didactic skills and develop new educational material. This is how you master the basic competencies of teaching. The in-school internship is compulsory and lasts 12 weeks, during which you are present at school two days a week

    Projects
    In the second year you will participate in the Winter Lab and Research Art Together (RAT) projects. You can read more information about this for year 1.

  • Deepening
    The third year is the last 'regular' year of study. You will take the final subjects of art history and philosophy and will be given the opportunity to plot your own course. An entrepreneurship programme is also part of this academic year.

    Internship
    You will choose the second internship yourself, so that you can immerse yourself more in the direction of your choice. This could be at a museum, a cultural institution or a school. During the internships, you will investigate how to convey a story, how testing works and how you look at a visual work. But an internship is also about questions such as: what is inclusive education? And: How can you make room within the framework of the education system for thinking differently?

    Overseas excursion
    The field trip in the third year goes to Rome. Here you will experience the international character of art and culture, and art history will come to life for you. Exploring and experiencing the art for yourself triggers new research questions.

    Projects
    In the third year you will participate in the Winter Lab and Research Art Together (RAT) projects. You can read more information about this for year 1.

  • Your own course
    In the final year you will increasingly fine-tune the knowledge and skills you are acquiring to match your talents and fascinations. You work independently.

    Educational design research
    In the fourth year, you will conduct an educational design research project. This will involve making an educational product, for example a series of lessons, a game or material that can be used for art education in museums. You must be able to put forward good theoretical arguments for what you have designed.

    Internship
    During a self-chosen internship you test your educational design in practice.

    Collection of visual work
    In addition to your educational design research, you will also create a collection of visual work and exhibit it during the ArtEZ finals.

Workshops & opportunities

The workshops are the heart of an art academy. Here you learn by making. Making a lot! You can do this with many different techniques and materials. The course has excellent workshops where you can work under the expert guidance of an instructor. There are many options: 

  • In the digital workshop you will find photography, video, animation and editing rooms and workstations for general computer instruction. There are also professional printing machines in this workshop and paper is for sale. 

  • This workshop is mainly focused on analogue printing techniques such as screen printing, typesetting, etching, electrolytic etching, lithography, relief printing and semi-digital riso printing. You can also take short courses in bookbinding and typesetting here. 

  • In the spatial workshop you will find a wide range of wood, metal, ceramic and plastic facilities. 

  • Here you can consult analogue and digital theoretical collections, for example when you are doing research. Multimedia specialists are ready to show you the way in our exceptionally large collection of (art) books. You will also find silent areas in the multimedia library. 

Study in Zwolle

Zwolle is a dynamic Hanseatic city, with winding streets and many original shops and eateries. It is a place where creative students, innovative entrepreneurs and free thinkers can easily meet.

ArtEZ finals

All our graduation students will present their graduation work during the ArtEZ finals. A visit to this graduation exhibition is a must if you are thinking about taking a course at ArtEZ.
