At the start of each year, BNO, the industry body for designers, presents the top 20 graduates from design courses in the Dutch Designers Yearbook. In the 2020 book we find three students of Art & Design Zwolle: Demi Horsman of Graphic Design, Michelle Wagenaar of Illustration Design and Celine Saas of Interior Architecture. Plus a mention for Sophie Charlotte Ceelen of Graphic Design.

BNO Yearbook 2020

The aim of BNO is to support and promote the work of designers and design agencies in the Netherlands. The students from ArtEZ are very much part of this new generation of designers who, according to the authors of the yearbook, are “highly empathetic and socially engaged”: “They think about the greater good and want to be of service.” The work of Demi Horsman, Michelle Wagenaar and Celine Saas was given a place of honour in the overview of 20 exceptional graduation projects.

Celine Saas

Designed ‘Licht van Troost’, a maternity centre and crematorium on the island of Texel. Thanks to the centre, islanders no longer have to travel to the mainland for life-changing and deeply human events such as births and funerals.

Michelle Wagenaar

Made a children’s book about negative emotions. Both adults and children have to deal with difficult emotions but existing children’s books seem to focus only on cheerful themes. BNO praises her imaginative illustrated poems.

Demi Horsman

Emphasises that producing a physical book requires craftsmanship. BNO describes her project as ambitious and thorough. She created the ultimate book, which is both a reader and a guide for young book creators.

Sophie Charlotte Ceelen

Is discussed in the yearbook’s essay for her work Permanent Geluidsoverlast (‘Permanent Noise’): “Ceelen effectively visualises the phenomenon of ‘Misophonia’ in clamorous collages.”
