What air teaches us about being different

  • Fine Art

From the megacity of Mexico City to the compact town of Arnhem: for Alejandro Jimenez, studying at BEAR Fine Art meant a radical shift. In scale, pace, and freedom. But it was within this change that he found inspiration. His finals work is an ode to adaptation. And to embracing difference.

What air teaches us about being different

Air as a mirror

“This whole project started with a reflection on air,” Alejandro explains. Air adapts. To any space. Any situation. It’s always moving, formless, yet present. That’s how Alejandro felt when he had to navigate a new environment as an international student. He translated this feeling into a sculptural, interdisciplinary work. With air not only as a metaphor, but also made physically present. He worked with polyurethane foam, a material that expands and hardens. “In this way, I made air tangible.”

I want to create a space where we can talk about difference.”

Room for confusion

His installation is layered. With materials, sound, and movement. No single message, but an invitation to reflect. “I want to create a space where we can talk about difference. Not from fixed categories, but through questions. A place where confusion arises, and hopefully also curiosity. About the unfamiliar.”

Sound, object, and context

BEAR Fine Art bachelor's program at ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design Arnhem gave Alejandro the freedom to explore his ideas across disciplines. Combining image and sound. While also telling a societal story. His finals work is not just an artistic statement. But a personal document of his journey.
