Graduation project BEAR Fine Art: bringing different worlds together on the screen

Anne Schoemaker graduated from the Bachelor of BEAR Fine Art and in a video, she tells us about her graduation project. “There are three photos in the exhibition. They’re from the series What Would You Like To See? In those series I asked three people to give me a photo of a precious memory or experience. A memory or experience they’d like to connect to their living room.”
She says people’s reactions are almost always emotional. “I think it’s because it’s confrontational to see something that’s a big longing. Something that’s not real. And when you connect it to your living room, it feels very real. Because it looks real.” In one of the portraits, we see Gisela standing in front of her ideal view: her husband who passed away two years ago. She’d like to see him one last time in the garden.
Another part of Anne’s graduation project is the film Grandpa, Grandma, Astrid. Anne explains that we get to experience a family that lives cut off from the rest of the world. Time passes by very slowly, and each act is done with extreme precision. She tells us more about the process of her work: “I think it’s very difficult to set a goal for myself, because my work is always created in collaboration with others. But maybe that is the goal. To get in touch with and create something with people I don’t know. And the whole process of getting to know someone and bringing different worlds together on the screen.”
The Bachelor of BEAR Fine Art: Base for Experiment, Art and Research in Arnhem is an internationally oriented course in fine art. You work together with students from all over the world in a dynamic, ambitious, and inquisitive environment. You get your own studio where you work with experts. And you’re guided by teachers that are internationally active artists, art critics and exhibitors. After you graduate, you’ll have developed yourself into a visual artist with your own signature.
