Viola

Viola

The viola is a special instrument whose sound resembles the human voice. The role of the viola is varied: there is a very special solo repertoire written for it and the viola plays a wonderful role in many chamber music pieces. And of course no symphony orchestra can do without the viola!

At the ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle you can master skills on your instrument, but you will also learn to develop and increase your knowledge and understanding of music. We do everything we can to support you in your development in the area of your choice. You can work with the viola in the field as a performing musician, in chamber music or in an orchestra, but you can also choose to settle as a viola teacher.

Specific admission criteria for Viola

In addition to the general admission criteria, there are also specific instrumental requirements. During the audition, you will perform at least one étude and a recital piece, unless indicated otherwise. The pieces mentioned are merely examples. You can also opt for other works of a similar level.

Your performing skills will be tested on the basis of:

  • Major and minor scales and the accompanying arpeggiated triads for three octaves;
  • Two études of different character, tempo and technique, such as Kayser’s 36 Studies, Wohlfart’s Opus 45 or Hoffmann’s Opus 87;
  • A simple concerto or sonata by, for instance, Marcello or Telemann.
