Each year we deliberately select a small number of students (20). We do this to guarantee plenty of quality time and space for individual support by lecturers, mentors and professional dancers/choreographers. In order to participate for the Bachelor of Dance course, you are required to audition and pass a medical and physical examination.

Bachelor of Dance admission criteria

  • Applicants must have completed VWO, HAVO, MBO (level 4) or the equivalent.
  • Maximum age for enrolment: 23 years for men and 21 years for women.
  • The course is taught in English, please see language requirements.
  • Applicants are required to pass the audition.
  • Applicants are required to receive a positive result in the medical and physical examination, see below.

Language requirements

All courses at ArtEZ have language requirements. Before 1 September you will need to prove your language proficiency by handing in a certificate stating your level.

Level before 1 September (if you need a residence permit to study at ArtEZ, the delivery deadline is 1 June!):

      • IELTS 5,5
      • TOEFL Paper 500
      • TOEFL Internet 60
      • TOEIC 600/240
      • Cambridge First (FCE) - Grade C (scale 160-161) / Cambridge First (FCE) - B1 level certificate (scale 154 - 159)

For the Bachelor of Dance the audition consists of various selection rounds: the candidate is required to dance a one minute solo of your own creation, this can be with or without musical accompaniment. The following classes will be given in order to give the candidate an opportunity to show their skills: classical, modern, contemporary, improvisation/composition. Following this, there will be a final selection.

Technical/physical skills

  • The current basic dance skills and development potential
  • Natural movement coordination

These are tested by the audition committee during ballet class, contemporary class and conditioning.

 Artistic talent:

  • Expressiveness as a dancer
  • Creativity in improvisation
  • Originality of movement
  • Sense of style and presentation

These are tested by the audition committee during improvisation class and your solo (solo a maximum of 1-2 minutes).

Inquisitive mind:

  • Able to articulate in English
  • Basic knowledge of contemporary dance & performance field

These are tested by the audition committee with a theory form consisting of 2 questions and talks with candidates.

Please be aware clothing requirements throughout the audition are: tightfitting clothing and ballet shoes for the classical class.Please note: if using music for the performance or your solo only use original CD recordings or download it on appliances such as your telephone or laptop.

Audition dates in The Netherlands - Arnhem
First selection day on 30 March, 31 March, 1 April or 2 April 2020. Second and final selection day on 3 April 2020. 

Medical and physical examination

A part of the admission process is the medical and physical examination. During this examination, your physical suitability for taking part in the course is checked. The examination will be carried out by staff members of the Papendal Medical Sport Centre (SMCP), in the ArtEZ building. It comprises:

  • Movement assessment, carried out by a physiotherapist/sports doctor
  • Medical examination, carried out by a physician assistant/sports doctor

The fee for the medical examination is approximately 160 euros and must be paid in cash on the spot, after which you will receive a receipt. Depending on your health insurance you may be eligible for reimbursement.

Result and validity

If auditioning outside of the Netherlands you will be notified of the outcome in the week following the Dutch selection.

Admission is only valid for the course for which you have enrolled. If you wish to apply for admission to another course, you must register for this separately. The admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance examination.


Enrolment for the Bachelor of Dance is done through Studielink. You will be notified about the date on which you are expected at ArtEZ.
