In order to be admitted to the Bachelor of Dance course, you not only have to be creative and independent, you also have to audition and undergo a medical and physical examination.

Bachelor of Dance admission criteria

  • Applicants must have completed VWO, HAVO, MBO (level 4) or the equivalent.
  • Maximum age for enrolment: 23 years for men and 21 years for women.
  • Certain language requirements apply for this English-taught programme
  • Applicants must have passed the audition
  • Applicants must have received a positive result in the medical and physical examination

Language requirements

All courses at ArtEZ have language requirements. You will need to prove your language proficiency by handing in a certificate stating your level. The level for the Bachelor of Dance is:

      • To start your study, you'll need IELTS 5.0 or comparable
      • By the end of the 1 st year, you'll need IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL Paper 525, TOEFL Computer 196, TOEFL Internet 70, TOEIC 620 or Cambridge FCE-C

The audition for the Bachelor of Dance has various selection rounds. In the first round you will dance a two-minute solo that you have choreographed yourself. You can choose to do this with music or without. You will also demonstrate your skills in various styles: classical, modern, contemporary, improvisation, composition and repertoire. After this, we make the final selection. We pay attention to:

Technical/physical skills

  • The current basic dance skills and development potential
  • Natural movement coordination

 Artistic talent:

  • Expressiveness as a dancer
  • Creativity in improvisation
  • Originality of movement
  • Sense of style and presentation

Clothing requirements during all components of the audition are: tightfitting leotard, tights and ballet shoes. In case of long hair: tied together.

Medical and physical examination

A part of the admission process is the medical and physical examination. During this examination, your physical suitability for taking part in the course is checked. The examination will be carried out by staff members of the Papendal Medical Sport Centre (SMCP), in the ArtEZ building. It comprises:

  • Movement assessment, carried out by a physiotherapist/sports doctor
  • Medical examination, carried out by a physician assistant/sports doctor

The fee for the medical examination is approximately 160 euros and must be paid in cash on the spot, after which you will receive a receipt. Depending on your health insurance you may be eligible for reimbursement.

Result and validity

You will be notified whether you have been admitted within three working weeks. If you are not admitted, we will inform you about the reasons for this.

Admission is only valid for the course for which you have enrolled. If you wish to apply for admission to another course, you must register for this separately. The admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance examination.


Enrolment for the Bachelor of Dance is done through Studielink. You will be notified about the date on which you are expected at ArtEZ.
