If you are walking through Antwerp soon and see an artist working on the street, you may encounter Iris ter Horst, a student of Illustration Design at the Academy of Art & Design in Zwolle! Indebuurt Zwolle encountered the third-year student as she boarded the train with her vase. ‘I made this myself,’ she says proudly.
Illustration Design is a programme that offers a great deal of freedom in terms of form, ranging from animation and photography to – in Iris's case – ceramics. The Illustration Design programme goes far beyond traditional illustration. Students are challenged to find their own unique, authentic visual language. In addition, there is a strong focus on research and personal motivation.
In Iris's case, this has led her to use her vase to explore how people react to art being created in a public space. ‘I want to finish my vase in a busy place, so that the surroundings become part of the story I want to tell.’
