Admission requirements

The language of instruction is English.

Dutch-speaking students can complete the selection procedure in Dutch.

If you would you like to apply for the ArtEZ Product Design course in Arnhem, you must meet the following conditions:

  • pre-university education (VWO), upper general secondary education (HAVO), secondary vocational education (MBO: level 4) or foreign equivalent level of education;
  • This English-language course is subject to language requirements;
  • You must complete a selection procedure.

Application

The application procedure consists of an online questionnaire, a home assignment and a physical admission interview. For the interview, we ask you to bring the results of the home assignment with you, along with a portfolio of your own work. If you live abroad, the admission interview will take place online.

After you have registered in Studielink, you will receive your student number and a link to our admission page by e-mail. This page will automatically take you to a questionnaire. Once we receive your completed questionnaire, you will automatically be sent more information about the admission procedure and the home assignment.

Selection

After applying for selection, you go through a selection procedure, during which we assess your chances of successfully completing the course. We will test:

  • Your creative ability: the ability to express yourself visually and to translate your ideas into physical objects. We will be looking at things like understanding of materials and technique, feeling for form and colour and the authenticity expressed by your work.
  • Your capacity for critical reflection. Here we will be looking for an enquiring and experimental attitude, curiosity, interest in art and culture and a specific interest in the discipline of product design.
  • Your ability to communicate. How good are your communication skills, to what extent are you able to share your inspiration and motivation (verbally, in writing or visually)?

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

  • On the selection day you will have an interview with members of the admissions committee, consisting of Product Design lecturers and students. During the interview, you will present your home assignment, which was sent to you when you submitted your application, and your portfolio. You will explain your work and talk about the ideas behind it. Foreign students are welcome on the selection day, but they can also do this interview by video call.

    You can put together your portfolio as you wish, made up of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional works: for example, drawings, photo series, product models, newspaper articles or graphic work. Bring work that provides a representative picture of your creative activities. Don't just bring finished products but also designs and sketches that provide insight into the creative process. Work that cannot be transported can be photographed or filmed and presented online or using a USB stick. Make sure you can explain your work.

Going to the selection properly prepared

If you are still not sure whether to apply for selection, why not register for a physical or online Study Try Out? You can also put yourself down for a 15-minute online portfolio advice session. E-mail f.kolkman@artez.nl (Frank Kolkman, head of course) to make an appointment.
