Application and admissionAre you enthusiastic about the Fine Art and Design in Education course in Arnhem? Do you see yourself as a future artisteducator who uses your artistic skills for yourself and others in order to be of value to society? If so, apply for the entrance exam for Fine Art and Design in Education.
Admission requirements
In order to be eligible for the Fine Art and Design in Education course at ArtEZ in Arnhem, you must meet a number of diploma and language requirements. You must meet the following conditions:
- Pre-university education (VWO), upper general secondary education (HAVO), secondary vocational education (MBO: level 4) or foreign equivalent level of education. Having chosen the culture and society profile at HAVO or VWO level is not a requirement, but may be an advantage. The same goes for a creative course at MBO level: it is not a condition, but it is useful and valuable;
- This course is taught in Dutch and is subject to language requirements;
- You must pass an entrance exam.
Admission requirements for part-time course and part-time accelerated course
A part-time version of this course is also available. The same admission requirements apply as for the full-time bachelor.
For graduates of a higher vocational Fine Art or Design course (Kuo) and for graduates of a second-degree teacher training course in Drawing, Crafts or Textile Arts, there is the Fine Art and Design in Education (part-time accelerated) course. They qualify for an exemption from the entrance exam and only have to complete an intake procedure.

Application
To apply for the entrance exam, go to Studielink and create an account. After you’ve registered via Studielink, you’ll receive an email from ArtEZ’s Student Affairs department. Once you've submitted the questionnaire, you’ll be entered into the ArtEZ system, and the course you've applied for can reach out to you.
Once you are registered in the system, you can download the home assignment and you will receive an invitation for the admission exam at the academy (please also check your spam folder for the official invitation to our admission exams, as our emails may occasionally end up there).
Admission exam at the academy
The admission exam at the academy consists of the following steps:
Beforehand:
-
Complete the questionnaire.
-
Compile your portfolio and bring it with you physically to the admission exam.
-
Complete the home assignments (a reflection assignment and a practical assignment). The reflection assignment must be uploaded in the system beforehand, while the practical assignment should be brought with you in physical form.
On the day of the admission exam (Saturday):
The admission exam takes place at the academy in Arnhem and lasts the entire day (approximately 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.).
-
You will have an interview with the admissions committee about your motivation for studying here. During this conversation, your portfolio and home assignments will also be reviewed and discussed.
-
You will work on a practical visual assignment, which you will present at the end of the day.
-
At the end of the day, you will receive the preliminary result of your admission exam.
Portfolio - how to compile it
To be admitted to the course, it is important that you show work you have created over the past three years – at home, at school, or as part of a course. This can include both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, such as drawings, paintings, photo series, animations, websites, furniture, clothing, posters, etc. If bringing the work in person is difficult, photograph it and compile it into a PDF file (images with a resolution of 72 dpi are sufficient).
It is essential that you have physical work to show during the admission exam. Bring pieces that give a representative impression of your creative activities. Don’t forget to include designs and sketches as well – we are interested in seeing your creative process. Make sure you can also talk about your work and explain your ideas.
Application dates
The scheduling of the admission exam is automated. Once you have registered via Studielink, the admission procedure will begin. After completing all required steps (filling in the questionnaire and downloading the home assignments), you will be informed of the date of your admission exam. There are four rounds available on different dates, and you will be placed in the next available one. We recommend registering as soon as possible and taking part in the first available round to maximise your chances.
- Saturday 24 January
- Saturday 7 March
- Saturday 11 April
- Tuesday 30 June
Entrance exam
In the entrance exam, we want to get an idea of your motivation for the course and your visual, artistic and communication talents. This will enable us to assess your chances of succeeding on the course.
We will test:
- Your creative ability: your ability to express yourself visually, to work based on observation and concept. We will also be looking for things like understanding of and feel for colour, form and material and the individuality expressed by your work.
- Your ability to communicate. How strong are your communication skills, to what extent are you able to share and discuss your fascination and inspiration? How do you critically view your own activities and how do you analyse them?
- Your ability to reflect critically on images. Here we will be looking for an inquiring and experimental attitude, interest in art and culture and a focused interest in the discipline.
Result and validity
The results of the entrance exam are determined based on established criteria and are evaluated based on the home assignments, the conversation, your portfolio, and (if possible) the visual assignments during the admission day at the academy. After the admission process, the admissions committee advises the Examination Committee on whether you will be accepted or not.
You will be informed on the same day as the entrance exam whether you have been admitted to the course. In the case of a rejection, we will try to provide you with insight into the reasons for this decision.
Fine Art and Design in Education can be followed at ArtEZ in two locations: Arnhem and Zwolle. You may only take the entrance exam at one of these locations. If you are accepted, you can switch later, as your admission is valid for both Fine Art and Design in Education in Zwolle and Fine Art and Design in Education in Arnhem. If you wish to apply for the admission process of another program or specialization, you must register separately for that. Admission is only valid for the academic year directly following the entrance exam.
