“Authenticity and originality are extremely important, self-criticism and quality awareness are essential. We expect our students to shoot for the stars. Never be fully satisfied, there is always room for improvement.”
The four-year Fashion Design programme in Arnhem doesn't just train one type of fashion designer, we offer Fashion Design 2D and Fashion Design 3D.
During their study, students specialise in the area that best suits their personal talents, ambitions and interests. The study programme has two specialisation tracks: Fashion Design 3D and Fashion Design 2D. This means that the same study programme can train you to be a designer of couture or jeans, or a fashion illustrator, photographer or pattern or textile designer.
During the four-year Fashion Design programme you will learn about the forms, function, quality and temporality of fashion, but also about art and professional theory. You will develop yourself in a learning environment in which innovation and experimentation are just as important as artistry and technological insight. Much attention is also given to the communicative aspects of fashion, through the courses Fashion Sketching, Photographic Imaging and Graphic Design – Publicity.
In 2011 the department of Fashion Design received the Grand Seigneur award, the highest distinction in fashion in the Netherlands, for offering cutting-edge and innovative fashion education at the highest level for over half a century.
The programme encourages participation in national and international fashion competitions such as Lichting and the Frans Molenaar Couture Award in the Netherlands, Hyères in France, ITW and the Mittelmoda Fashion Award in Italy, and the H&M Design Award in Sweden. The students of ArtEZ Fashion Design are regularly the recipients of awards both in the Netherlands and abroad.
In 1953, at the Art Academy Arnhem, the legendary Elly Lamaker founded the department of Fashion Design and Fashio Illustration, a department that would prove to be very successful.
The study, now called Fashion Design, has since seen continuous growth and is now one of the best fashion study programmes in Europe. Only a limited number of talented students are admitted annually.
