ArtEZ @ Dutch Design Week 2021

A call for less: less consumption, less production, and therefore less waste. And where less isn't possible? More better: more sustainable products with more value, so that consumers deal with products differently. That is what Dutch Design Week 2021 (DDW21) is all about. On the overarching theme of The Greater Number, looking for renewed value between consumer and product is key. ArtEZ translates the quest for the better number into various projects, expositions and research.

ArtEZ is represented at Dutch Design Week 2021 by the Bachelor Design Art Technology, the Bachelor Crossmedia Design, the Bachelor Product Design, the Bachelor Interior Architecture (IN_architecture), the Master Interior Architecture (Corpo-real), the Master Performance Practices, the Master Critical Fashion Practices and the Professorship Tactical Design.

  • Class of 21 is an exhibition that provides a platform to the design departments of all the Dutch Art Schools - ArtEZ among them. It poses a simple question to all the participating schools: what does The Greater Number mean to you? To your school and to your students. Class of 2021 gives a unique overview of the ideas and materialization of design projects which are currently prevalent among design students in The Netherlands. It also gives an insight in the direction in which the design-discipline will move forward in the next years: breaking traditional design notions, questioning the norm and finding its own original voice.

  • In a constantly changing world, a designer must always be able to relate to new questions. It is not enough to design a beautiful product or space that says something about today. Today is quickly outdated. With this speed of change, the designer has to look for the limits of the familiar because the unknown occurs quickly. This new reality requires a different designer than before: working from an investigative and open attitude.

  • ‘Op Druk’ inflatable furniture by Robbert Schneiders is a Bachelor Product Design 2020 graduation project. The inflation of the air cushions ensures the connection and the load-bearing capacity of the furniture.

  • The Linen Project is a joint initiative by the Master Fashion Design (Practice Held in Common) and Crafts Council Nederland. It investigates and works towards reactivating the economic viability of small-scale local flax cultivation and linen production in the Netherlands.

  • Presenting the best graduation work, Archiprix introduces a new generation of the most talented spatial designers. The best graduation work adresses a range of assignments, often before the urgency starts to set in. The Archiprix foundation is a collaboration of all Dutch accredited master's programs in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture.

  • Manifestations Young Talent Award: best Talent of Dutch Art Academies 2021. Award Ceremony Best of Graduates of Dutch Art Academies 2021. As always, also this year the exhibition consists up to 80% of projects of young talents. Scoops. Discover them before they show up in the collections of major museums around the world. With their objects and images they challenge you with a sharp edge, but remain innovative and playful.

One of the finalists, who pitch their project to the jury on 20 October during Dutch Design Week in the Melkhal, De Caai, Eindhoven, is Gijs Schalkx with hir graduation project 'the Slootmotor': a vehicle running on self extracted fuel from the water.

The Greater Number - a quest for the better number

For 2021, Dutch Design Week (DDW) has chosen the overarching theme of 'The Greater Number', the quest for the better number. With this theme, DDW on the one hand calls for less. Less consumption, less production, and therefore less waste. And where less isn't possible, more better. In other words, more sustainable products with more value, so that consumers deal with products differently. The theme is about striving to change the behaviour of consumers and manufacturers. By looking for renewed value between consumer and product, we can move towards changes in design practices.
