ArtEZ Music Theatre - Karavaan festival
Since 2019, a group of predominantly third-year students from ArtEZ Music Theatre has created an annual site-specific performance for the Noord-Holland site-specific theatre festival Karavaan. The students are guided by renowned theatre makers.
Karavaan 2025 will take place from May 29 to June 9.

From May 29 to June 9, the Karavaan Festival returns! This annual performing arts festival takes place in the northern part of North Holland. It features site-specific theater by nationally renowned and emerging theater makers, set in culturally and historically significant locations in the Alkmaar region.
Karavaan offers ten days of unique location-based theater, a lively festival hub, theatrical installations, performances in public spaces, live music, food and drinks, talkabouts, and various artistic experiences.
This year, ArtEZ Music Theatre will once again present a performance:
“Where the Wind Sings and the Water Speaks” – A Music Theatre Piece about Windmills, Wind, and Water.
“Windmills once dominated our landscape and managed our water levels, shaping how and where we could live and work. Will we be pumping or drowning in the future?
Windmills are often seen as nostalgic relics of a bygone era, cherished as cultural heritage and symbols of our past. They kept the polders dry—our man-made land.
Today, spatial pressure on the landscape is immense, and the threat of water remains. Can we keep our feet dry through imaginative innovation and by learning from the past?”
A collaboration between Music Theatre students and the performance collective FADAT. FADAT’s work balances between the existential and the absurd, exploring how humans—willingly or not—are manipulated by everything around them, from other people to non-human forces.
