Royal Military Band Johan Willem Friso

The Royal Military Band Johan Willem Friso was established on January 1, 2005, following a reorganization of military music. Its duties include providing musical accompaniment for official receptions of heads of state and ambassadors by His Majesty the King, enhancing military ceremonies, and performing relationship concerts.

History

The Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’ continues the traditions of the former Royal Military Band from The Hague (founded in 1829) and the Johan Willem Friso Band from Assen (founded in 1819). The title ‘Royal’ was granted on August 3, 1876, by King William III to the then-military band in The Hague. Her Majesty Queen Beatrix graciously granted the new band the ‘Royal’ title as of January 1, 2005.

When the band is deployed for ceremonial occasions, such as the opening of the parliamentary session (Prinsjesdag) and the funerals of members of the Royal House, it performs in the Ceremonial Dress of the Guard Regiment Grenadiers. Notable features include the bearskin hats and ceremonial staff banners, which were gifted by Queen Emma to the former Royal Military Band in 1901.

The KMK ‘JWF’ Today

The Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’ is a “corporate orchestra.” For the most part, the band operates within the armed forces. Additionally, it has a representative role on behalf of the military and regularly performs various concerts and tattoo shows both domestically and internationally.

On the concert stage, the Royal Military Band ‘Johan Willem Friso’ distinguishes itself with a repertoire that balances original wind music, transcriptions of classical works, light music, and entertainment. Special arrangements are regularly written, and the band frequently collaborates with well-known artists.

The tattoo performances are characterized by refined choreography and a strong military presence. Since October 2023, the band has been under the leadership of Major Frans-Aert Burghgraef.
