Owning SCYLLA / Heimland festival - master's course Music Theatre

Meet Scylla. Nymph. Sample. Myth. Hybrid. Half half.
A beastly creature that will devour you with its dog-headed body. A tragic cursed woman. Chained in lost beauty. She is indirectly not the only being who is a beautiful, seductive woman above, but another being, often vile, hideous or dirty, below. There are countless mythical women like her all over the world. In a certain journey she takes you through her different manifestations, written by Homer, Ovid, Virgil... But who is Scylla when she does her own research and gives voice to her story? Come listen to jazz, spoken word and dog barking. Come listen to Scylla

Samantha Janssen and Chris Hillen are first-year students at the Master of Music Theater at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem. Especially for Heimland, they went into the Diepenheim Workshop to create this short performance.

Samantha is a theater maker with a preference for physical play and magical realism. She works as a director for various theater groups, writes short stories that have been published in several collections and writes/directs stories in which imagination and reality merge under the production house Lavender Films. Her last film, “De Swarte Krie van De Deelen”, premiered in 2024 at the Dutch Film Festival.

Chris graduated in 2017 as a Theater Teacher at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Zwolle. She subsequently worked as a theater maker and theater teacher in various places and immersed herself in the musical genre, including at the MusicAllFactory in Tilburg and when teaching her MBO Musical Performer students. She is now taking the Master's degree in Music Theater to research embodied singing, and she creates performances in which she wants to connect her musicality and her love for associative theater.
