In collaboration with Theater a/d Rijn, Plaatsmaken, and The Hub, ArtEZ is launching a new initiative that offers young artists space and guidance for artistic research: Arnhems Stadsatelier. Various (emerging) artists will have the opportunity to experiment artistically and share their work with the public and the Arnhem community. This cross-disciplinary collaboration fosters creative exchange between artists, students, and city residents.

Projects with social themes

The participating artists each engage in unique artistic research. Indian-Dutch theatre maker and storyteller Abhishek Thapar focuses his project, Lacuna Kitchen, on the stories of kitchen workers with migrant backgrounds. Collaborating with ArtEZ students, he provides insights into social-artistic methods and documentary theatre.

Emerging artists

Four recently graduated artists—three from ArtEZ and one alumnus from the AHK (Charlotte Gillain, Mime bachelor)—explore diverse themes. From collaborative art projects and democratic art processes in neighbourhoods to investigating the boundaries between physical and virtual worlds, these makers are at the beginning of their artistic careers, creating innovative work that resonates with a wide-ranging audience.

Ro Smit (BEAR Fine Art, 2023) invites the public to participate in workshops at Plaatsmaken and queer café De Kurk, culminating in a collective exhibition centered on the concept of slow art-making. How can a body find calm during the creative process? How can an artist take enough time without external pressure? These questions shape Ro's artistic approach and their silkscreen-print-based performances.

Levi Overvest (BEAR Fine Art, 2023) engages with the Arnhem neighbourhood of Klarendal, gathering topics through a democratic election process from young residents. These topics inspire new work, which Levi creates at Plaatsmaken while exploring techniques for silkscreen printing on ceramics. The artworks are displayed in public spaces in Klarendal and at Plaatsmaken.

Mel Kikkert (Creative Writing, 2023) is captivated by the internet and its inhabitants, exploring interpretations of this digital realm. Mel probes the boundaries between virtual and physical worlds, with themes like role-playing and the tension between fantasy and reality. At Theater a/d Rijn, they examine theatre as a medium, creating new work through words, visuals, and digital tools.

Contributing to art in society

Arnhems Stadsatelier aligns seamlessly with ArtEZ's mission to bridge between art and society. This initiative creates space for sharing research, methods, and experiences through platforms like ArtEZ's APRIA. ArtEZ students and faculty are actively involved in workshops and research discussions, making this project a valuable learning experience for the next generation of artists.
