Zwolle is the Mecca of the comics scene, according to RTV Oost. This is partly thanks to Melanie Kranenburg and Niek van Ooijen, both alumni of the Bachelor's course Comic Design at the ArtEZ Academy for Art & Design in Zwolle. They organized the Nieuwe Garde Comic Festival for the first time in 2022. On March 9, 2024, the third edition took place at the Academiehuis Grote Kerk in Zwolle. For the first time this year, there was also a group exhibition featuring students from the Comic Design course at ArtEZ. The market's setup was also done by ArtEZ students.
About the Nieuwe Garde Comic Festival
With over a hundred young, up-and-coming, and innovative comic creators from the Netherlands and Belgium, the Academiehuis Grote Kerk in the heart of Zwolle during the Nieuwe Garde Comic Festival was filled to the brim with comics, merchandise, comics, and more. There were workshops for both children and adults: Learn how to draw your own comic strip or make your own paper. The Nieuwe Garde Comic Festival is an initiative of 9e Kunst and is made possible by financial contributions from the municipality of Zwolle, ArtEZ University of the Arts, ZwolleFonds, GastvrijZwolle, the Hervormd Weeshuis, and the Pictoright Fund.
