SPOTTED: Product Design alumni offer a hopeful perspective with innovative artificial coral reefs
- Design
SPOTTED in NRC - Jesse de Bont and Max Dijkstra, alumni of the Product Design bachelor’s course in Arnhem and founders of ReefSystems, showcase how design can make a global impact. During their studies at ArtEZ, this duo conceived a revolutionary idea: modular blocks for the artificial construction of coral reefs. They collaborate with local communities to contribute to the preservation of our natural treasures.

A hopeful perspective
Coral reefs worldwide are under threat from trawl nets and dynamite fishing, with serious consequences for marine life and communities dependent on fishing. With ReefSystems, Jesse and Max are striving to breathe new life into coral reefs globally, from Aruba to Kenya.
We installed thirteen artificial reefs along the south coast of Aruba this week, in collaboration with local contractors, marine park managers, and two universities. We designed the reefs for this project in a way that we believe makes them best suited to withstand the strong currents of the Caribbean Sea, and the surface of the blocks is optimal for coral attachment and growth."
