Eline de Boer and Irene van Dijke, first-year Crossmedia Design students at AKI ArtEZ in Enschede, made a gift for the King on behalf of the Geschiedkundige Vereniging Oranje Nassau (GVON). King Willem-Alexander accepted the gift last Friday at Paleis het Loo, where the 100th anniversary of the GVON was celebrated. The king is patron of the association, which manages over 7,000 works of art and has about 400 members.

Practical project for AKI education

Early this year, the GVON contacted ArtEZ AKI in Enschede with a request to present the king with a gift that might be emblematic of its enormous art collection. In order to serve as a reminder for further anniversary visitors, it also had to be possible to manufacture 100 miniature versions of the gift.

Working with the first-year Crossmedia Design students, lecturer Chris Slutter got to work. Nine intriguing designs surfaced, and the association was shown them. The members ultimately decided on the Eline de Boer and Irene van Dijke design for a vase that fuses traditional components with modern methods.

Since the ceramic vase was produced by hand and then scanned, every "imperfection" is precisely accommodated by the 3D layer. This adds a handmade touch to the sleek 3D printing method.

Crossmedia Design

The boundaries between the different design domains (photography, illustration, film, animation) are blurring and the range of possibilities is growing fast. The professional field needs designers who can handle the boundaries and possibilities of the new media landscape and who can make conceptual and visual choices. The Crossmedia Design course is closely aligned with the professional practice of designers and indeed likes to be a step ahead. On this wide-ranging course, you will become familiar with all the different design facets, expressions and media and we will challenge you to identify your own place within the field.

GVON

The GVON's collection includes more than 7,000 paintings, prints, medals, manuscripts, occasional ceramics, curiosities, utensils, silver and textiles. Most of the paintings can be seen in the historic rooms of Het Loo Palace.
