SPOTTED: Comic Design students about their profession in Het Financieele Dagblad
- Design
How do students of the Comic Design course experience their profession? In Het Financieele Dagblad of June 3rd 2022, an extensive article appeared in which students and the head of Comic Design at the Academy for Art & Design in Zwolle, have a say. They tell why they chose the profession and why they see a bright future for the profession. Curious? At the bottom of this news item you will find a link to the entire article.

"Does the comic still have a future?" With that question, the article opens (and the answer is: yes). Among others, two Comic Design students and the head of the program, Mara Joustra, are interviewed to explain this special profession.
Improve your perception
Suze Scholten (20) says: "The course improves your perception and you learn a lot about storytelling: scenario, body language, dialogues. In this way you develop your drawing skills automatically. When I see where I am in my third year I think: wow."

Storytelling
Kanyanut ter Meulen (23) also learned a lot during the course. "(...)especially to look inquisitively and to think carefully about what exactly you want to tell." During the training you get subjects like philosophy, art history, visualization, classical drawing lessons and digital tools. Everything you need to tell a good story, because that is the core of the course. Kanyanut now realizes this too: "It doesn't always have to be beautiful."

Growing job market
Mara Joustra, head of the study programme, sees the job market for Comic Design students growing: "The classic comic such as Tintin and Asterix is on the wane, but other forms are growing enormously, including fantasy, manga, comic journalism and webcomics. That's what young people, like our students, are reading." According to Kanyanut, the program also guides you to a place in the job market: "They do their best to help you, also with networking. And we get guest lectures from professionals who talk about their methods and how to find work."
