SPOTTED: Anne Eding, Jazz & Pop alumna, on New Generation from NTR NPO2

  • Music

New Generation, a program from the NTR, highlights musicians originally from the jazz tradition who are exploring and crafting their own unique sound. The series documents what it is like to be on the cutting edge of the jazz world, where jazz blends and harmonizes with hip-hop, folk and classical music. The 9 March episode followed the violinist Anne Eding, a recent alumni of the Jazz & Pop Bachelor programme in Arnhem.

In this cinematic documentary we see Anne outside, at the Kröller-Müller museum and in the forest. She loves being out in nature, especially on Menorca, her favorite island, a place where she finds a lot of inspiration and absorbs all the sounds and feelings she gets from the ocean. For her, these kinds of places are the most captivating: “I’m fascinated by the small details in life, those in your surroundings and in the people you meet. Those are what I like to use as the basis for creating something."

Expressing who you really are

Studying Jazz & Pop has opened up a new musical world for Anne, as she explained in the documentary: “[My study] opened many doors for me, for example, by showing me ways to approach a musical idea and move away from it. Through learning that, I have stumbled upon many of what I call “items;” that is, improvised little musical fragments that you just come up with out of the blue. And from those, I make my own, unique musical vocabulary. For me, first and foremost, jazz is a way of showing people who you are as a person and expressing that through your improvisation. You bring out your own authenticity through your music.

“The Little Atmosphere”

“I’m always looking for the moments that seemingly come out of nowhere; from our subconscious, from our dreams, from another dimension. From those places where we think that there is nothing there, but in reality, there is a lot. That’s what I’m searching for, what I’m really trying to capture. At some point I started calling this subconscious phenomenon ‘de kleine atmosfeer- the little atmosphere.’”

“Creating something that came out of your subconsciousness is so powerful. It brings me so much joy and uplifts my spirits (…). I want to pass that skill on to other people as well, so that they also can become aware of how much lies in their own subconscious, so that they can search for what they already have within themselves and begin to express that.”

Violin as an extension of herself

Anne says that her violin feels like an extension of herself: “Sometimes I wish I didn’t have to respond to others with words, and instead could just pick up the violin and answer that way.” As such, to get to know Anne better, it’s best to hear her play.
