Elsbeth Veldpape writes book chapter on history of education in arts

  • Research

On 3 November 2021, the book Vijftig jaar leraren opleiden (Fifty years of teacher education),  edited by Gerda Geerdink and Anja Swennen, will be published by Boom uitgevers in Amsterdam. Elsbeth Veldpape, coordinator and lecturer of the Master Education in Arts and researcher at the Professorship for Art education as Critical Tactics (AeCT), wrote the chapter on art education; the first (and only) published article on the recent history of education in arts in the Netherlands.

The education in arts courses can be seen as the odd ones out among teacher training courses. They are part of higher art education and occupy a position between art education and higher education. The chapter by Elsbeth Veldpape examines the origins of today's art teacher training programmes, the consequences of the above-mentioned intermediate position and the ongoing governmental interference that has accompanied it, as well as the changing social views on both art and education. These have made great demands on the study programmes.

Elsbeth Veldpape: "Attention to the history of teacher education gives us insight into the present. At the end of my article (page 108), I write about the future: I find it interesting that art and education are less separate fields today than they were in earlier decades. Partly because of this, art education has been able to emancipate itself in the past decade. The artisteducator has a new professional identity, in which it is not so much necessary to choose between the primacy of teaching or artistry: both are inextricably linked."

Arts in Education courses at ArtEZ

At ArtEZ, too, there are many signs that the boundaries between art and education are fading. Students from six teacher training programmes – four full-time bachelors and two Masters's courses – combine their love of profession with inspiring and guiding other people, using their skills and knowledge to bring about social change.

About the book (Dutch)
