Student life in Enschede

Enschede is unique. Within 15 minutes, you can cycle from the lively city centre to the countryside, or from your workshop to an underground concert. The city embraces experimental minds and has a close-knit community of makers, artists and creatives.

Enschede has two ArtEZ academies: AKI ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design and ArtEZ Academy of Music in Enschede.

It’s easy to connect and make new friends – at your academy, in a workshop, or at a party where someone spins LPs on an old turntable. The city has a vibrant underground scene, from evening line-ups at Vestzak to exhibitions in alternative spaces. Want a change of scene? Germany is right next door. And while you’re in Enschede, don’t miss De Oude Markt – a popular spot for students. Have coffee in the sun, or enjoy live music at a bar until the early hours. With more than 30,000 students, the community is lively but small enough that you’ll meet familiar faces all over town.

Student accommodation in Enschede

Many students find a room through word of mouth. Rents are affordable, and you get good value: your own space, room to work and housemates who are often part of the ArtEZ community.

You may live in a former school building, shared accommodation or a studio on the edge of the city. Binnensingelgebied is a popular area, but there are also nice near Volkspark or with views of the countryside.

Enschede feels spacious and international. Some students even live across the border in Germany or in Hengelo, a creative hotspot nearby.

Art and culture

Enschede’s arts scene is small but dynamic. Alongside institutions like Tetem, Rijksmuseum Twenthe and Concordia, you’ll find cultural hotspots such as Sickhouse, which offers performances, games and experimental installations. Vestzak focuses on audio, improv and informal encounters between creatives. Grensfrequentie, led by students from the Academy of Music, hosts events and provides a place to collaborate and perform.

If you want to combine art and technology, Enschede is the place. Each year, the city hosts GOGBOT, an international festival showcasing AI art, robotics, electronic music and futuristic performances.

Another favourite among ArtEZ students is TANKSTATION cultural filling point, known for its varied programme of arts and music – and you can take part yourself.

Second hand and fabric shops

Enschede has a long tradition in textiles that continues today. You’ll find a strong heritage alongside students working with materials in innovative ways. At OVERLAP, you can exchange, repair or upcycle garments.

The city is also a great place for second-hand shopping. From large warehouses to hidden gems in the suburbs, you’ll find everything from pre-loved clothes to jumpers perfect for wearing in the workshop.
