The perfection of imperfection

  • Music

The perfection of imperfection, that is what Hanneke wants to show during her graduation performance for the Classical Music course in Zwolle. But before she could embrace that imperfection herself, there were some things that preceded it.

My view of todays recital (a piece of music performed solo, ed.) is that its actually out of date. Thats why I wanted to launch a new concept: a performance with which you can reach a much wider audience. Hannekes graduation work has therefore become an interdisciplinary performance. With video and dancers. The videos during the performance show the process leading up to the performance. Hows the rehearsal going? What setbacks did I encounter? That sort of thing. The process is the common thread in my performance.

‘Look at what you can do now’

It takes some courage to show the public the – sometimes bumpy – road to your final project. Striving for imperfection is much harder than striving for perfection. For Hanneke, the penny dropped during the course: At the beginning of my studies, I was very concerned with how my music should sound. With what my music should become in the future. Only with how I could get even better. Until a lecturer said: Hanneke, look first at what you can do now. Those words made me look at it totally differently: the process is more important than the end result.
